This is my 11th post for Blaugust.

I’ve been having a bit of a blogging identity crisis of late. Actually, it’s been going on for a while. There used to be a clear reason people came to my blog – I had a niche. I was a WoW player. I wrote about resto Druids, and sometimes hunters. I wrote guides on how to heal, tips for boss fights, the odd bit of theorycrafting, or gear advice. I got a fair amount of traffic to these kinds of posts, from search engines, regular readers and people linking to them from forums and such. My Warcraft Logs guide (which is actually up to date) and Resto Druid guide (from way back in MoP) are still, kinda sadly, two of my most popular posts each day.

It’s been a year since I’ve played WoW so, obviously, I don’t have a whole lot to say about it any more. Even in my last year playing Warcraft, I was pretty burnt out and posted sporadically. Over the last few years, my blog traffic has gone down…down…down. I’m a bit of a stats nerd and this graph is pretty depressing:

Cannot be Tamed yearly stats

It’s not so much that my views are low (they’re actually not bad), but the fact that they’ve been steadily dropping for the last 3 years, and dropping by a lot. I know, it’s not about traffic. It’s certainly not about money, as my one google ad I’ve hidden at the bottom of the page so as not to be obnoxious has earned about me about 5 (unpaid) dollars in the years it’s been there. Write for yourself, blah, blah, blah. But honestly, I like knowing that people are reading what I write. I appreciate the people who are regulars and friends, who stick around and comment more than those who come from search engines, but still, I feel like I peaked in 2012 and it’s disconcerting.

When I bring up the topic of falling blog traffic, people usually offer me two reasons for it. First, that blogging as a whole is becoming less popular. I’m not sure I believe that, and I really have no frame of reference other than my own blog. Second, I no longer have a niche. People don’t know what they’re going to get when they come to my blog. Sometimes I write game reviews – could be on a 4 year old indie game, could be on the latest Call of Duty. Sometimes I write about feminism, or what I’m playing, or The X-Files. I write about whatever’s on my mind rather than try to stick to a certain topic. The thing is, I like it that way. Just like with my videos – though my retro reviews are by far the most popular, I also want to talk about new games. Now that I’m not confining myself to WoW, I don’t want to confine myself to anything.

So… I guess I’m really just whining that my traffic has gone down, because I don’t really plan to change anything.

What do you think? Does a blog need a niche to be “successful”? Do you like when blogs stick to one topic rather than act as a stream of consciousness?

Warcraft Logs – Basic Raider Evaluations

Another day, another section added to my Evaluating Raiders with Warcraft Logs guide.

This time, I give some tips on basic raider evaluations, using my Hunter as an example. I go over all sorts of things, like:

  • Evaluating damage done
  • Ability use
  • Targets/damage prioritization
  • Timing and frequency of cooldown use
  • Debuffs applied to enemies
  • Avoidable damage taken
  • Self-healing and healthstone use

Go check it out, and feel free to ask questions or give suggestions.

Evaluating Raider with Warcraft Logs

Evaluating Raiders with Warcraft Logs

There is a new combat analysis site in town, and its name is Warcraft Logs. While the site is currently in open Alpha and will likely not be officially released until Warlords of Draenor, it still has a ton of functionality and is already a great tool for evaluating logs.

Since log analyzers aren’t entirely intuitive to use, I’ll be writing a guide on how to use Warcraft Logs to analyze and improve both your own performance and that of your entire raid (just like I did with World of Logs).

The guide is in its beginning stages, currently I just cover the basics – how to upload a log and a breakdown of the log UI. Soon I’ll be adding sections on how to analyze individual raiders and how to use logs to find out what’s happening on boss fights when things go wrong.

I’ve added the first two sections to my guide section, please check it out and let me know if you have any feedback.

Evaluating Raiders with Warcraft Logs

Warcraft Logs

I’m a big fan of WoW stats and analyzing logs, as you can probably tell by how often I write about the topic.

Recently, a new site for WoW combat log analysis was introduced – Warcraft Logs! Developed by Kihra, Warcraft Logs looks like an amazing supplement to, and eventual successor to World of Logs. It just entered open alpha this week, so there are some bugs and features that haven’t been implemented yet, but it’s looking good so far.

I’m pretty excited about this new site. The WoL devs have mostly been just keeping the lights on for the last year or so. Big bugs get fixed (eventually), but there haven’t been any new features implemented or improvements in a long time. Warcraft Logs seems set on giving raiders a better analysis resource.

Warcraft Logs overviewThe logs are pretty sleek looking. The overview page gives you the basic information – damage done, healing done, damage taken by ability. You can very easily constrain the time range to look at a specific part of the fight by clicking and dragging to select a time frame on the top chart.

Warcraft Logs Damage Done

The Damage Done panel is similar to WoL, but has some nice improvements. If you look at Damage Done by Ability, the chart at the top very nicely maps out when and how much damage each ability is doing. Mousing over the ability name will show you the breakdown of how much damage each target took from that ability. Clicking on the ability will graph out uptimes. Mousing over the blue bar will break down hits, crits, and ticks. And, my absolute favourite feature on the Warcraft Logs damage screen – pets abilities are included on the same page as the player! No more having to look at your pet(s) and yourself separately – all the abilities are in one place.

Warcraft Logs - Buffs and Debuffs

The Buffs and Debuffs screen isn’t the most user friendly right now, but it is going to be redesigned soon™.

Warcraft Logs Deaths

The Deaths page is simple and easy to use. In addition to a graph of the player’s health level, it includes the log entries of all damage and healing taken since the last time the player was overhealed. Along the left side, where you can see all deaths there are a few neat features, like the icons for the last 3 sources of damage are shown. I believe the time in brackets is supposed to indicate the time between the last heal received and the death, though it doesn’t look entirely accurate right now. Improvements planned for this view include showing survival cooldowns by default.

Warcraft Logs Resources

One feature of Warcraft Logs I’m stoked for is the Resources pane. Unfortunately, resources were removed from the combatlog so this panel isn’t working at the moment, but the Blues have said they would be added back soon. When that happens, the resources pane will let you see mana/energy/focus/rage levels of players throughout the fight. This is particularly interesting for healers.

It’s really easy to create or join a guild using Warcraft logs, and you’re allowed to belong to more than one guild on a single account, which is nice. There’s also a Personal Logs option so you can log LFR or Flex or target dummy practice without cluttering up your guild’s page.

There are a few important features that are not available yet, but are planned. For me, the most important of these are an expression editor and a rankings system. Lack of these things is the main thing that will keep my raid running both WoL and WL for the time being. After all, rankings are half the fun. Once these, and the other planned features are implemented, Warcraft Logs will be an amazing resource. It’s already well on its way there.

Once Warcraft Logs gets past the alpha stage, I’ll likely write up a proper guide on how to use it to analyse logs. In the meantime, you should give it a try for your next raid.

4.2 Resto Druid Gear

4.2 brings all kinds of new gear for resto druids, available from raids, valor points, rep vendors and some new crafted loot too.

By Item Slot
By Location

I am not including a ‘best in slot’ list in this. I feel best in slot is a mostly meaningless term at this point. Which piece is best depends on what other gear you have, and with reforging most of it is interchangable anyways. When looking at upgrades look at:

  • Does it have more Intellect (which comes with a higher ilvl)? Then it’s likely an upgrade.
  • The only stat we have that is subject to caps or breakpoints is haste. If you are under 2005 haste, look for pieces with haste. If an ilvl upgrade will drop you below 2005 you may want to reconsider it.

The secondary stat priority I will be using for T12 is:
Haste to 2005 > Mastery > Crit > extra Haste

There is enough spirit on gear that I’m not factoring it in to the priority, I’ll just take it as it comes.

Here’s a sample of what my ideal (normal) gear setup would look like: Chardev profile – this would allow for the 4 set bonus and still retain 2005 haste.

*As 4.2 hasn’t released yet, some information may be missing or incorrect. I will update as things are confirmed*

Restoration Druid Guide for Cataclysm

My resto druid guide has been put together and posted. It includes information on talents, spells, glyphs and stats. I will be updating it as changes are made and will likely be adding new sections on dungeon and raid healing strategies shortly.

If you have any comments or notice any mistakes, please comment here or send me an email at cannotbetamed@gmail.com.

Cataclysm Restoration Druid Guide

WoL Expression Editor – Help Please!

I’m looking for someone who is adept with SQL and the WoL expression editor to give me a hand. I need to find a query to use to find out which abilities Deterrence works on. My current method requires a lot of combing through useless junk from the combat log in order to find what I’m looking for.

What I basically need to see is:

  • When Deterence is cast and when it fades
  • Incoming damage that hits or is deflected/parried/dodged

I need all heals, auras and energy gains to be filtered out.

Can anyone help me out? I’ll bake you cookies!

Edit: I found something that works okay:
(targetName=”Jasyla”) and (type=1 or type=2) or (spell=”Deterrence”)

This shows me all incoming damage that hits and misses me, as well as when Deterrence is up. I’m still happy to see any other queries though.

On another note, the combat log is a little screwy. I was looking at a Valithria fight from a while ago, and saw this in the log (yes, I pulled aggro. Bad Jasyla):

[22:06:45.147] Jasyla gains Deterrence from Jasyla
[22:06:45.163] Jasyla casts Deterrence
[22:06:45.476] Gluttonous Abomination hits Jasyla Parry
[22:06:45.679] Risen Archmage Frostbolt Volley Jasyla 2525 (R: 1162)
[22:06:47.460] Gluttonous Abomination hits Jasyla Parry
[22:06:49.429] Gluttonous Abomination hits Jasyla Parry
[22:06:50.101] Jasyla’s Deterrence fades
[22:06:50.632] Risen Archmage Frostbolt Volley Jasyla Deflect

From this it looks like there is a half a second of lag between Deterrence being cast and the effect kicking in. It shows that I get hit by the first Frostbolt Volley with Deterrence up. Then Deterrence fades and I successfully deflect the next volley. Odd. Anyone else get results like this in their logs?
