Resto Druid Gear – What to Wear in 4.3

When 4.3 came out I posted a list of all the new gear available in 4.3 (which was just updated yesterday). But what gear should you be aiming for? What do you need from raids and where should you be spending your valor points first?

Normal Mode Dragon Soul

Here’s a good gear set to aim for if you currently have access to normal mode raids:

Helm – Deep Earth Helm (Dragon Soul – Warmaster Blackhorn)
Shoulders – Deep Earth Mantle (Dragon Soul – Hagara)
Chest – Deep Earth Robes (Dragon Soul – Ultraxion)
Wrists – Bracers of Flowing Serenity (crafted)
Hands – Fungus-Born Gloves (Valor vendor)
Waist – Girdle of the Grotesque (Dragon Soul – Hagara)
Legs – Deep Earth Legwraps (Dragon Soul – Yo’sahj)
Feet – Boots of Fungoid Growth (Valor vendor)
Neck – Petrified Fungal Growth (Dragon Soul – Morchok)
Back – Woundlicker Cover (Valor vendor)
Ring 1 – Ring of the Riven (Dragon Soul – Hagara)
Ring 2 – Signet of Suturing (Dragon Soul – random boss drop)
Trinket 1 – Seal of the Seven Signs (Dragon Soul – Warlord Zon’ozz)
Trinket 2 – see note below*
Relic – Lightning Spirit in a Bottle (Valor vendor)
Weapon – Maw of the Dragonlord (Dragon Soul – Madness of Deathwing)
Offhand – Ledger of Revolting Rituals (Dragon Soul – Ultraxion)

*There are a number of options for your 2nd trinket. For those who favour output over regen (like me!), go with Windward Heart (Dragon Soul – random boss drop). If you’re more into regen, go for Heart of the Unliving (Dragon Soul – Spine of Deathwing). It’s a sizable loss of Intellect, but 880 spirit not something to overlook if you’re having mana issues. Alternatively, if you have heroic Jaws of Defeat (Firelands – Majordomo) it’s still a very strong option, providing both a large amount of Intellect and mana savings.

Hard Mode Dragon Soul

Once you start killing heroic Dragon Soul bosses, you’ll want to upgrade all of your valor and crafted gear to the heroic raid gear. Even if the secondary stats on the valor gear look stronger, the extra Intellect that comes from the better ilvl will always be worth it.

Upgrades from the normal mode list:

Wrists – Mycosynth Wristguards (Heroic Morchok)
Hands – Deep Earth Handwraps (Heroic Warlord Zon’ozz)
Feet – Treads of Sordid Screams (Heroic Ultraxion)

Valor Gear

Valor points burning a hole in your pockets? The first upgrade to get is the Woundlicker Cover for 1250 points. It’s really the only cloak option, so you may as well get this one first.

After that, just upgrade your lowest ilvl pieces. Good choices will likely be Boots of Fungoid Growth (1650 points) since the boots in Firelands were poorly itemized or the Lightning Spirit in a Bottle (700 points) if you’re still using one of the ilvl 378 relics.

Patch 4.3 – What Druids Need to Know

Patch 4.3 will go live today. Are you ready for all the new content? Up to date on class changes? Here’s what resto druids need to know.

Class Changes

Wild Growth healing has been reduced by 20%.
Glyph of Wild Growth now also increases the cooldown on Wild Growth by 2 seconds.

We knew this was coming. I was hoping they’d reconsider the extent of this nerf during the PTR, but apparently not. These two changes together will result in about a 35% nerf to Wild Growth overall. But fear not, druid friends. We will still be awesome and heal all the things. This change won’t really affect how we heal, it will just decrease our output a bit.

The glyph change, however, should give you pause.

From a pure output perspective, the difference between glyphing and not glyphing WG will be almost inconsequential. Assuming you use WG every time it’s off cooldown and it hits the maximum amount of targets each time (which is a big assumption on 10s or fights where people are spread out), it will heal more people when it is unglyphed (25 targets in 40 seconds, compared to 24 with the glyph). But having the glyph will also reduce the amount of times you can cast the spell in that timeframe, freeing up 1 GCD every 40 seconds.

Of course, perfect conditions like this don’t generally occur in raids. I recommend carrying around lots of dust of disappearance so you can switch the glyph in and out from fight to fight, based on the raid damage patterns. Keep the glyph for fights where the raid is grouped up or big raid damage happens less than every 10 seconds. Drop the glyph when the raid is spread out or damage happens faster.

Nature’s Focus now also reduces Cyclone and Entangling Roots spell pushback.

Nice for PVP.

New Gear

There’s all kinds of new gear available, from the new 5-man dungeons, quests, valor vendors and Dragon Soul. It’s even nicely itemized for us! Check out my resto gear list to plan your loot list. Our stat priority hasn’t changed any. You’ll still want Int > 2005 haste > mastery > crit. And enough spirit to not go oom.

Transmogrification

Tired of having volcanos on your shoulders? Sick of barkface? Transmogrify! If you don’t already know what you want your gear to look like, take a look at all the Druid Tier options available. If Tier is not your thing, check out Disciplinary Action’s amazing, comprehensive guide to all the leather gear.

Dragon Soul

If you want to be prepared before stepping foot in the new raid instance, Icy Veins has you covered for boss strats. If you prefer videos, check out Learn to Raid.

Other Updates

My resto druid healing guide has been updated for 4.3. My guide to Buffs and Debuffs has also been updated to reflect the change that attack power buffs now provide extra melee attack power.

Have fun in Dragon Soul!

4.3 Resto Druid Gear

4.3 and the Dragon Soul raid bring all kinds of new gear for resto druids, available from raids, valor points, the new 5-mans and some new crafted loot too.

By Location

Want an idea of what gear to be aiming for and how to spend your Valor points? Take a look at my suggestions on what to wear.

When looking at upgrades look at:

  • Does it have more Intellect (which comes with a higher ilvl)? Then it’s likely an upgrade.
  • The only stat we have that is subject to caps or breakpoints is haste. If you are under 2005 haste, look for pieces with haste. If an ilvl upgrade will drop you below 2005 you may want to reconsider it.

The secondary stat priority I will be using for T13 is:

Haste to 2005 > Mastery > Crit > extra Haste

There is enough spirit on gear that I’m not factoring it in to the priority, I’ll just take it as it comes.

Transmogrification and Earning It

Last week Blizzard announced some new features that will available in patch 4.3. One of the things I’m most looking forward to (besides new raid content, of course) is Transmogrification. This will allow you to change the appearance of your gear to match other gear you own.

My current gear is extremely unfortunate looking, so I’m very excited about this feature.

Jas Jas, the bark-faced girl.

It didn’t take me long to figure out how I will be transmogrifying my druid’s gear once it’s available. Thunderheart (Tier 6) has always been my favorite gear set. It’s one of the few that doesn’t include the fashionable “sticks on helm” look – it’s different, yet still manages to be very druid-y. I’ve had the set sitting in my bags for 3 years, just waiting for something like this to happen. My weapon choice was also pretty obvious to me. ZG was my first raid instance and the first set of purple pixels I really coveted was Will of Arlokk. I’ve had that little beauty in my bank for 5 and a half years, and am very excited at the prospect of carrying it around again. Druid transmogrification? Done and done.

Druid Tier 6 gear Thunderheart

Come on 4.3, I'm ready for you!

Then I came to my priest. She’s only been my Horde main since Cataclysm so I don’t have much gear in my bank to choose from. I pulled up Altas Loot and used the Dressing Room to look at every set. Tiers 5 and 6 are my favorites so I started mentally preparing myself for some old-school SSC, TK, MH and BT runs. But the more I thought about grabbing a few level 85 guildies to face-roll our way through the old raids for gear, the more it felt…wrong. Pasiphae never killed any Tier 5 or 6 bosses when they were current. Hell, Pasiphae didn’t even exist back then. The pretty gear is there, ripe for the taking, but I haven’t earned it. I feel like walking around in T5 or T6 gear would be misrepresenting myself and I don’t want to do that.

I’d have no problem going back for gear that I had once earned but had vendored or sharded (Jasyla DE’d her T5-looking flower shoulders and I might want those back), but going and getting gear I never had? From bosses I never fought as they were meant to be? No thanks. I think Pasiphae will proudly wear her T11, 12 (or 13 when available) gear when 4.3 drops because that’s the gear she’s earned. By the same token, you’ll never see Jasyla running around in Tier 2 because she never killed a single boss in BWL.

Though the the raids I never completed may have some nifty looking outfits, I want to wear gear that came from bosses I actually had to work to kill. I want to have earned it.

4.2 Resto Druid Gear

4.2 brings all kinds of new gear for resto druids, available from raids, valor points, rep vendors and some new crafted loot too.

I am not including a ‘best in slot’ list in this. I feel best in slot is a mostly meaningless term at this point. Which piece is best depends on what other gear you have, and with reforging most of it is interchangable anyways.

The secondary stat priority I will be using for T12 is:
Haste to 2005 > Mastery > Crit > extra Haste

There is enough spirit on gear that I’m not factoring it in to the priority, I’ll just take it as it comes.

Here’s a sample of what my ideal (normal) gear setup would look like: Chardev profile – this would allow for the 4 set bonus and still retain 2005 haste.

*As 4.2 hasn’t released yet, some information may be missing or incorrect. I will update as things are confirmed*

Dead Sexy

My baby priest is growing up. She’s now level 62 and is trudging through Outlands. I love some of the Outlands zones, but there is one major thing in Outlands that I do not like: The leveling gear.

Outlands leveling gear

Forget hide cloak and helm, I want to hide it all. Yech.

Now that I’ve decided my priest will be my Horde main I’m reconsidering my choice of undead. Generally I like my characters to be either pretty females or male Taurens. Perhaps a race change is in store for Pasiphae?

Druid Fashion

This week I read  a fanastic post by Xeo at Rez the Weak that took a look at the evolution of priest tier gear over the years. I really enjoyed reading it and decided I would do the same for druid gear sets. Let’s take a look back at druid fashion, from the first dungeon set to what’s in store in Cataclysm.

Dungeon Sets 1&2: Wildheart and FeralHeart

Druid dungeons sets - Wildheart and Feralheart
If you wanted to collect the Wildheart Raiment in original WoW, you had your work cut out for you. The 8 pieces dropped in three different dungeons and the drop rates were less than stellar. When you managed to collect them all you were rewarded with a set with wildly random stats and set bonuses (oh vanilla WoW itemization, how silly you were). The set is decent looking, I’m a big fan of purple and I like the textures. My biggest problem with this set is the shoulders, they were neat looking but had a lot of clipping issues. Any arm movement and you usually ended up with a wing through your head. The bird helmet also looks a bit like it’s eating your brains.

Tier 1 – Cenarion Raiment

T1-Cenarion-Raiment
Oh my. After slogging through Molten Core with 40 people for months, you got to look like this. The Cenarion Raiment is a low point in druid gear design, or any gear design for that matter. It looks like my poor druid got lost in the forest and had to resort to sticking shrubs, twigs and tree bark on herself for camouflage to avoid being eaten by bears. The shoulders and helm look really flimsy and the colours are bland. Druid gear has come a long way since this, thank Elune.

Tier 2 – Stormrage Raiment

T2-Stormrage-Raiment
If you were to ask me what animal I wanted my gear to look like, a moose would probably not be my first choice. However, the Stormrage Raiment kinda works. It certainly improves on the colours and style of the tier 1 set and the moon designs are very fitting for a druid. This set also has a much more impressive rack. 🙂

Tier 3 – Dreamwalker Raiment

T3-Dreamwalker-Raiment
The Dreamwalker Raiment was the first really fanastic looking druid set. The greens and gold are lovely. I also really like the snake deatils on the shoulders. This was the first time we got a piece of gear with glow-effects, which unfortunately you can’t see in the picture. Seeing druids running around in this set was always impressive, not only because it’s gorgeous but guilds that were making their way through the original Naxx were quite rare.

Dungeon Set 3 – Moonglade Raiment

Dungeon Set 3 - Moonglade-Raiment
The Moonglade Raiment was the first, and only, dungeon set of Burning Crusade. It’s clearly modelled after T3 but is less intricate and has been toned down to more neutral colours. I like this set a lot. It’s certainly not flashy but I think that’s fitting for entry-level, non-epic gear.

Tier 4 – Malorne Raiment

T4-Malorne-Raiment
I’m not a fan of the Malorne Raiment, it makes me feel naked. None of the colours really go together and the antlers on the side of the helmet make Jasyla’s head look gigantic. The blue orbs on the shoulders seem misplaced.

Tier 5 – Nordrassil Raiment

T5-Nordrassil-Raiment
The Nordrassil Raiment is a bit of a mixed bag. The robes and gloves aren’t terribly impressive, but the helmet is unique and the shoulders are amazing. No piece of gear has every screamed ‘resto druid!’ so much as these lovely, bark-covered, purple flower-sprouting, moon-accented pauldrons. Having to shift into tree form and hide them always made mad.

Tier 6 – Thunderheart Raiment

T6-Thunderheart-Raiment
I love the Thunderheart Raiment. It was different from the previous druid sets, with an aboriginal feel and a refreshingly different colour scheme. The red and turquoise accents really made the gear pop. I particularly like the eagle motif and the cutouts on the chestpiece. This set is also from my favourite tier of raid content and I managed to collect all 8 pieces, so I have a soft spot for it.

Tier 7 – Dreamwalker Regalia

T7-Dreamwalker-Regalia
Normally, I wouldn’t be a fan of recycled gear, but since the T3 set was so amazing and I never got to wear a single piece of it, I didn’t mind when the Dreamwalker Regalia was brought back as the first gear set of WotLK. The updated gear set was even more ornate than it’s predesessor and gave druids a much needed bit of flashiness. Tier 7 was the first time that different colours were used to represent different levels of gear. I prefer the green, but the purple is nice too.

Tier 8 – Nightsong Regalia

T8-Nightsong-Regalia
The thing that strikes me about the Nightsong Regalia is the detail. Graphically this set was a real step up – the textures are amazingly sharp compared to the previous gear sets. Though the moon helmet has its detractors, I like it. I think this is a really solid tier set.

Tier 9 – Malfurion’s Garb and Runetotem’s Garb

T9-Malfurion-and-Runetotem
Ahh, tier 9. It brings back memories of running TotC on 4 seperate lockouts, memories I’d rather forget. Malfurion’s Garb is not a favorite. The robes are alright, but I’m not a fan of the bird beak and the shoulders don’t look like they belong on a druid. The worst part for the tier 9 set…we had to share the design with rogues! Having to be shared by two classes made T9 look like it was having a bit of an identity crisis. Runetotem’s Garb I wastn’t overly familiar with since I don’t have a Horde druid. It sticks to the typical brown and green druid colours and I actually prefer it to the Alliance set.

Tier 10 – Lasherweave Garb

T10-Lasherweave-Garb
When the Lasherweave Garb was introduced, I was not pleased. The helmet and shoulders looked demonic, not like something druid would wear. However, I’ve grown more fond of it, I’ve been wearing it for over a year and it has wormed its way into my heart. I like my spiky horns and hungry-looking shoulders.

Tier 11 – Stormrider’s Vestments

T11-Stormrider's-Vestments
And finally, here we have our first tier set for Cataclsym (images from MMO-Champion). I’ve seen worse, but I’ve also seen a whole lot better. First of all, the electric blue of the normal set is really not a good druid colour. This set strikes me as more fitting for a shaman than a druid. The helmet looks awkward and the shoulders aren’t great. I admit though, I’m very critical of most new gear when I first see it, but tend to warm up to it after a while, so ask me how I feel about it once I get a piece or two.

That’s it – the history of druid gear. Which is your favorite? Which would you not want to be caught dead in? Take the poll or answer in the comments.
