Hunter Tips for General Nazgrim

General Nazgrim is the 8th boss in Siege of Orgrimmar. He’s a warrior with the typical warrior abilities, rage generation,and stances. He also summons waves of adds to help him throughout the fight.

The most difficult part of the fight is learning to control and efficiently kill the adds.

The fight

Nazgrim has the three typical warrior stances, which he cycles through during the fight, spending 1 minute in each. 

  • Battle Stance – He begins the fight in this stance and generates 1 Rage per second.
  • Berserker Stance – This is the second stance. He takes and deals 25% more damage and gains more rage from abilities.
  • Defensive Stance – This is the third stance, which causes Nazgrim to take reduced damage and gain rage any time he’s attacked by a non-tank. No one but the tanks should be attacking while he’s in defensive stance.

What does Nazgrim do with all this rage? He’ll cast an ability every 15 seconds, depending on how much rage he has.

  • Heroic Shockwave (30 rage) – Nazgrim leaps to a random player, dealing damage and stunning anyone in the impact zone. After this, Aftershock lines go out in random directions, dealing damage to anyone in them and generating rage per person hit. If you’re doing the mechanics correctly, you’ll see this ability a lot.
  • Kor’kron Banner (50 rage) – Nazgrim summons a banner, which causes any adds present to generate rage for him. This has low health and is easily killed.
  • War Song (70 rage) – Deals damage to all players (50% of max health).
  • Ravager (100 rage) – Spawns an axe that whirls around the room. It inflicts a large amount of damage on anyone it hits, and makes Nazgrim gain rage. Ideally, you don’t want to see one of these at all during the fight.

Every 45 seconds or so, Nazgrim will summon a group of adds into the fight (I believe it’s 3 in 25 and 2 in 10). There are a few different types of adds (listed in rough order of kill priority):

  • Warshaman – This guy is a healer. He drops Healing Tide Totems which must be killed (and never allowed to get near Nazgrim), and casts Empowered Chain Heal, which must be interrupted.
  • Arcweaver – A mage that does high damage with Arcane Shock (a single target nuke) and Magistrike (AoE). Both of these are incorruptible. In heroic mode, the Arcweaver becomes the highest priority target as it is very dangerous.
  • Assassin – A rogue that starts in stealth and tries to Backstab his fixated target. To deal with the Assassin, the focused target should either kite, or face the mob.
  • Ironblade – A warrior that spins around the room, doing damage to anyone he hits. Since this add is most dangerous to melee, it should be the priority target for ranged once the Shaman/Arcweaver is dead.
  • Sniper (heroic only) – A hunter that will focus a target and shoot at it. It will also cast Multishot, so it needs to be faced away from the raid.

Control of the adds is a very important part of the fight. The shaman and mage needs to be locked down with interrupts. The other mobs can be stunned, rooted and slowed.

Talent Recommendations

Level 15 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera

Level 30 – Binding Shot
This is helpful for controlling the Ironblades and Assassins.

Level 75 – A Murder of Crows (SV)/Blink Strikes (BM)
I am generally Survival for this fight and I like AMoC. If you time it carefully, you can get one right on the pull and put up a second just before he switches to Defensive stance. If you’re BM, stick with Blink Strikes.

Level 90 – Glaive Toss
There aren’t very many adds and they tend to be quite spread out so Barrage isn’t fully effective a lot of the time.

Tips for the Fight

  • Your pets basic attacks do not cause Nazgrim to gain rage during Defensive stance. So your pet can attack during this phase. However, Kill Command will make him gain rage. So don’t use it during defensive if you are BM and leave your pet on him.
  • If you do this fight as Survival, leave your pet on the boss full time.
  • If you get focused by the Assassin – kite! Use Concussive Shot, Binding Shot, Disengage. Deterrence if it gets too close and you can deflect all the melee attacks.
  • Help slow down the Ironblade, or an Assassin focused on someone else (Concussive Shot, Binding Shot).
  • If you are focused by the Sniper, Deterrence will not deflect his shots (which is odd), but you still get the damage reduction.
  • I generally avoid Frost Traps, as they can obscure Aftershocks on the ground.
  • Deterrence is a great thing to use if you’re about to get hit with a War Cry.
  • Disengage is good for getting out of poorly positioned Aftershocks.
  • Refresh any DoTs on Nazgrim just before he enters Defensive stance.

Breaking up is hard to do… but not that hard

Raiding guilds in WoW tend to be a very fluid thing. I like to park myself in a guild for an extended period of time until something happens that makes membership very difficult, but not everyone is this way. Some people guild hop. Some can’t make up their mind about where they want to raid. Some people aren’t even solid on if they want to (or are able to) raid. 

Fourteen months ago, as Mists was coming out, the officers of Apotheosis made up a roster of 33 people that were going to tackle whatever raid bosses Pandaria could throw at us. Of those 33, 15 are still raiding with us. Almost half of the 17 people who stopped raiding for real life reasons, but are still part of the guild. The rest have left. Between then and now, we also trialed no less than 33 more raiders – 14 of whom are still around. The 19 that are gone either didn’t pass their trials or left for greener pastures. So, by my count (which could be off by one or two, I tend to forget people who aren’t around for long) 66 people have raided with Apotheosis over the course of the expansion.

That was a very long-winded (for me) way of saying that raiders come and go. It’s a fact of WoW.

What I don’t get is why so many people who choose to leave lie about it, or go about quitting in a manner that is very inconvenient for their (soon to be ex-) guild. I’ve seen it all. Though I’m happy to report we haven’t had any more gquitting incidents quite like this, a surprising number of the people who have quit raiding with my guild have done it in a way that left me (and others) with bad feelings towards them.

Improper ways to quit your raid include:

  • Saying you need to step down due to real life issues (your family is sick, your dog died, you have so much schoolwork to do) then joining another raid guild within a week.
  • Saying you got hacked/your account is locked, then ninja transferring off server.
  • Knowing you won’t be able to make raid times due to a schedule change you’ve had planned for a while but not letting your guild know until the day before. On the same day your buddy who plays the same class/spec as you is planning to announce that he’s stepping down.
  • Ragequitting in the middle of a raid.
  • Announcing that you’ve cancelled your WoW account on Twitter before (or instead of) telling anyone in your guild directly.

It’s the liars that bother me the most, because I just don’t get it. I understand that sometimes a guild and a raider aren’t a good fit, but why is it so hard for some people to say that? Are we not killing bosses fast enough for you? Do you not like our loot rules? Do you miss the people from your old guild? Do you want to be the leader? Do you think we’re all assholes? Just say so.

I guess my belief that people are capable of acting like mature adults is rather precious and naive. But seriously, you don’t even have to say it to someone’s face. You can send a message from the comfort and safety of your desk.

Making up a story – especially a sob story that makes people sympathize with your plight – instead of just saying you’re looking for greener pastures makes you a tool. It also seems like a lot more work than just saying “I don’t want to raid with you anymore.”

People will find out – guild officers are accomplished internet sleuths.

Hunter Tips for Kor’kron Dark Shaman

Kor’kron Dark Shaman is the 7th boss in Siege of Orgrimmar. It’s a multi-mob, multi-tank fight (3 >2) and is a bit of a clusterfrak of  bad things on the floor that the raid needs to avoid.

Even through the Shaman share a health pool, my guild always tanks them separately (on normal and heroic) to make staying alive much easier, and I recommend that strat. 

The fight

When the fight starts, you face not only the two shaman (Haromm and Kardris), but also their wolf mounts, Darkfang and Bloodclaw. The wolves do a nasty stacking bleed on their current target, so they should be burned down quickly. Keep all 4 mobs together until the wolves are dead so you can take advantage of cleaves.

Once the wolves are dead, send two tanks, the melee dps and most of your healers away with Haromm. My raid pulls him up the hill to the right of the building. Leave 1 tank, the ranged dps and a couple (or 1 on 10 man) healers to deal with Kardris.

Haromm’s side needs more healers because of Toxic Mist. That portion of the raid will also have to avoid a number of mechanics that can kill them very quickly – Foul Stream, Ashen Wall, and in heroic mode – Iron Tomb. It’s very important for the Walls and the Tombs to be positioned carefully so the raid doesn’t get boxed in and die a horrible death.

Kardris’s side also has a lot of bad stuff to deal with and will need to make the most of the space in the room. Toxic Storms are large purple swirlies which spawn on players and need to be avoided. The storms will also spawn Toxic Tornados which are smaller, but quick-moving. All ranged and healers should stay on one side of the tank so you can control where these spawn. Once you start running out of space, rotate around the room a bit until you have a clear area. Starting at 65%, Kardris will start summoning Foul Slimes, nasty little adds with a 3 yard aura that does heavy damage. Kill these asap, but don’t get too close to them. Periodically Kardris will cast Falling Ash. This creates a large red circle on the floor and after 15 seconds does very heavy damage to the whole raid (anyone actually in the red circle will be killed). The terrain can cause issues with seeing exactly where the borders of the Falling Ash circle are. The heroic mode mechanic is Iron Prison, which is cast on random players throughout the fight, dealing 100% of their health as damage after a minute. Damage mitigation cooldowns or shields are required to keep people alive through this.

At 25% the Shaman cast Heroism on themselves, increasing their damage and haste.

Talent Recommendations

According to the top parses, BM outperforms SV on this fight. Maybe I’m just bad at BM, but I find this fight so much easier and my dps much better as Survival. The Foul Slimes are one of the biggest concerns for the ranged and I find them easier to mow down with hard hitting shots rather than my pet. But, YMMV.

Level 15 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera
This is more for heroic. You can get unlucky and get targeted by Iron Prison a bunch on this fight, so having Deterrence available more often is good. On normal, you might find the speed boost from Postehaste more beneficial.

Level 90 – Barrage
The cooldown on this lines up very nicely with the summoning of Foul Slimes.

Tips for the fight

  • The bosses initially start off in a building and are a pain to get to. Do your raid a favour and reset them so they respawn outside. Don’t forget to dismiss your pet first.
  • Use all your cooldowns and AoE/Cleave away while the bosses and their wolves are grouped up. Get those puppies down fast.
  • If you happen to get hit by a toxic tornado (it happens), use a Healthstone immediately.
  • Make sure Barrage is up while the Foul Slimes are spawning and also try to have an almost full focus bar so you don’t need to cast many/any Cobra Shots while they’re up. Start off with Multishot as they’re spawning and hit Barrage once they are all out. I generally don’t find dropping Explosive/Frost traps worth it. However, Binding Shot is great for keeping them still if you place it properly.
  • You can use Deterrence to completely deflect the Falling Ash damage. You should definitely do this if you’re lower on health when it’s about to hit.
  • On heroic, make sure Deterrence is up if you get Iron Prison – it takes a minute to deal its damage, so you have lots of warning. Use Deterrence when there are only a couple seconds left. It won’t completely negate the damage, it’ll just apply the damage reduction. It’s also a really good idea to use a WeakAura to let you know when you have the debuff and when it will expire.

My BlizzCon 2013

This past weekend I got to attend my second BlizzCon. It was amazing, even better than the first one I went to. I got to see so much, play some demos and, most importantly, meet a whole lot of the WoW community and devs.

I got in to Santa Ana on Thursday afternoon, where I met my guildie and roommate Serrath then headed to the Hilton. Immediately after checking in, I ran into the first group of people I knew – Vidyala and Vosskah, who I met before when they came to Toronto and who had procured me my ticket, and Kelesti. After a quick hello, I went to my room to get settled, then met up with a few more of my guildmates – Grumdy, Srs and Jack – then went to wait in line to get our tickets. The line took a while, close to 2 hours. It was nice to have my own name on my badge this year. Last time I came to Anaheim without a ‘Con ticket and someone generously gave me one when I got there.

I really wanted to make it to the Wowhead/WI party this year but again, it didn’t happen. After getting badges and going for dinner the party was full by the time I got there. No one really wanted to wait in another line, so we headed back to the Hilton instead. At the Hilton I finally met up with the rest of my guildies – Sara, Kal, Chronis, Slout, Raymiee, Sheep, Shawnelle, Tikari and Kristin.

I also met up Arielle from the Inconspicuous Bear, and we had one or two (or three or four) drinks together, including an N7 toast with Kal. Most of my guildies were tired from the day of travelling and waiting in lines, so I soon ended up as the last member of Apoth standing. It was all good though, there were plenty of people to meet and talk to. I mostly hung around with Arielle; Entropia, an ex-guildmate who knows everyone and was always happy to introduce me to them; and Novvie, who isn’t in Apoth but sort of got adopted by us over the course of the weekend.

I met a bunch of people for the first time on Friday, including: Hamlet, Perculia, Theck, Jed, Quori, Noel (who gives great hugs), Sunnier, Rhidach, Antigen, Dysmorphia, Ophelie, Zahrym, Bashiok, Ghostcrawler, Bajheera and WarcraftJen.

Thursday night was a lot of fun and BlizzCon technically hadn’t even started yet.

Friday morning everyone got up bright and early so we could get good seats for the opening ceremonies. We managed to find almost everyone and got to sit together for these. While waiting for them to start, Serrath and I snuck off to the Heroes of the Storm demo area to take advantage of the small line. Heroes was a ton of fun. I had never played any type of DoTA/League game before and I really liked playing support as Tyrael. Also, our team won, which makes things even more enjoyable. I ended up playing two games of this on Friday, and while I wasn’t nearly as good playing Illidan, the game was still really cool. I can’t wait for the beta to come out.

Opening ceremonies were great – it’s so obvious how much all the developers and people who work at Blizzard love the work they do and their excitement is infectious. I watched a number of panels, and had a very brief look at the Warlords Demo. I really only had time to look at the new level 100 talents (Hunter talents – amazing. Bola Shot! Druid talents – meh).  In the afternoon Apotheosis met up at the Meeting Stone. Finally, all 16 of us were together in one place! Apotheosis sure knows how to represent.

While we were at the Meeting Stone I also got to meet Navimie. I was really excited to meet her after reading her blog for so long and getting Navi-spammed in game. I also got to meet Khuruuk and Tinderhoof, but not Reesi, who I only glimpsed briefly before she disappeared forever.

I watched the fan contests that night. Some of the costumes were great. I particularly liked the feral troll druid, the training dummy and the Tuskarr. The fan-made movies and art were good, and so were the musical acts – though I don’t think they picked the right winner.

That night was the Convert to Raid party where I got to meet even more people. I met a number of the Something Wicked crew – Esoth, Rotund, Derevka, Settesh, and Anafielle. I’m always talking to SW people on Twitter or going to their Flex/LFR runs, so it was nice to finally be able to meet some of them. I also got to talk to Daxxarri, Megacode, Soanix and Kerriodos briefly at the party. I saw, but didn’t meet, Swifty and decided to make it my mission to have girls (or boys) in hotpants follow me around at parties (now accepting volunteers). 

Then it was back to my second home at BlizzCon, the Hilton lobby. Friday was a pretty crazy night, the drinks were flowing, and most of my guild managed to stay up until last call. I got to spend some time talking to one of my favourite Druids – Hamlet.

Ghostcrawler was also around and he spent some time talking to all the Apoth members gathered around, which was amazing. We got some pictures, and some hugs.

I got off to a bit of a slow start on Saturday. Serrath and I decided that sleeping and goingt IHOP for some greasy breakfast was top priority and we ended up getting to the convention centre pretty late to watch the live raid. When we got there Method was already on Garrosh and Midwinter was wiping on Dark Shamans. Tanking those two shaman together? Midwinter is brave. And crazy. That sounds (and looked) terrible. I’m not usually a fan of watching video games on streams or anything, but the live raid always gets me pumped. It’s surreal and amazing to hear a crowd of thousands of people cheering as a boss is ticking down from 5% health or collectively groaning as some boss ability takes out 5 players.

I also stayed for the WoW systems panel. There are a lot of changes coming in Warlords. The Garrison system looks really interesting and some of the inventory changes announced are huge quality of life changes. The biggest announcement was that hard-mode raiding (now called Mythic) would be one size only: 20. This finally gets rid of the whole 10 vs. 25 man debate and a whole bunch of tuning issues. I think this will make most guilds go through some adjustments, but ultimately it’s a good thing. And I think they picked the correct size.

On Saturday I wanted to hang out with so many people that I ended up going for dinner twice. Once with one group of Apotheosis and then with another group, plus Hamlet, Perculia, Hestiah, Esoth and Ilaniel. After that it was back to the Hilton (surprise!). The lobby was absolutely nuts on Saturday night. Packed to the brim and so noisy. I made it my mission to find the people who I really wanted to meet but hadn’t run into yet and got some help from my friends to find them.

First on that list was Vixsin. She’s been one of my favourite bloggers ever since I read her first post on Life in Group 5. She writes so well and is such a good healer resource. I finally managed to find her after circling the lobby a few times and some tweeting back and forth. There was quite a bit of fan-girling going on.

The next person I really wanted to meet was Absallom, protection paladin from Blood Legion. Not just because of his WoW credentials, but also because he’s from Toronto too and is always posting amazing food pictures on Twitter. I found him eventually and he was super nice and related to my Toronto traffic woes.

I also found Ion Hazzikostas, who I bugged for a bit about raid design. One of the first things I asked was “So, Immerseus. What were you thinking?” Then I immediately felt bad that I was being one of those people, and let him know I really liked the other 13 bosses in Siege.

I chatted with a few more people before the night was over. Matticus – there is photographic evidence of this somewhere, but I haven’t’ seen it yet. Ghemit – who always seemed to be everywhere at once. Pat Krane, which involved me being a bit of a fangirl – CTR is the most well-made and well-voiced WoW podcasts I’ve ever heard – and being really stoked when he told me how much he liked my blog. 

The Hilton party wound down, Sunday morning came so fast and then it was time to go back home.

I’m sure I met many more awesome people during my time in Anaheim. It’s hard to write this post without just making it a big, long list of people. It was also really cool when people recognized me and came up to talk. It was a bit surreal getting compliments in-person about my blog, or even better, about my food posts. BlizzCon 2013 was a really excellent time and really reminds me why I love this game so much and why I’ve continued to play it for so long.

Warcraft Logs

I’m a big fan of WoW stats and analyzing logs, as you can probably tell by how often I write about the topic.

Recently, a new site for WoW combat log analysis was introduced – Warcraft Logs! Developed by Kihra, Warcraft Logs looks like an amazing supplement to, and eventual successor to World of Logs. It just entered open alpha this week, so there are some bugs and features that haven’t been implemented yet, but it’s looking good so far.

I’m pretty excited about this new site. The WoL devs have mostly been just keeping the lights on for the last year or so. Big bugs get fixed (eventually), but there haven’t been any new features implemented or improvements in a long time. Warcraft Logs seems set on giving raiders a better analysis resource.

Warcraft Logs overviewThe logs are pretty sleek looking. The overview page gives you the basic information – damage done, healing done, damage taken by ability. You can very easily constrain the time range to look at a specific part of the fight by clicking and dragging to select a time frame on the top chart.

The Damage Done panel is similar to WoL, but has some nice improvements. If you look at Damage Done by Ability, the chart at the top very nicely maps out when and how much damage each ability is doing. Mousing over the ability name will show you the breakdown of how much damage each target took from that ability. Clicking on the ability will graph out uptimes. Mousing over the blue bar will break down hits, crits, and ticks. And, my absolute favourite feature on the Warcraft Logs damage screen – pets abilities are included on the same page as the player! No more having to look at your pet(s) and yourself separately – all the abilities are in one place.

The Deaths page is simple and easy to use. In addition to a graph of the player’s health level, it includes the log entries of all damage and healing taken since the last time the player was overhealed. Along the left side, where you can see all deaths there are a few neat features, like the icons for the last 3 sources of damage are shown. I believe the time in brackets is supposed to indicate the time between the last heal received and the death, though it doesn’t look entirely accurate right now. Improvements planned for this view include showing survival cooldowns by default.

Warcraft Logs Resources

One feature of Warcraft Logs I’m stoked for is the Resources pane. Unfortunately, resources were removed from the combatlog so this panel isn’t working at the moment, but the Blues have said they would be added back soon. When that happens, the resources pane will let you see mana/energy/focus/rage levels of players throughout the fight. This is particularly interesting for healers.

It’s really easy to create or join a guild using Warcraft logs, and you’re allowed to belong to more than one guild on a single account, which is nice. There’s also a Personal Logs option so you can log LFR or Flex or target dummy practice without cluttering up your guild’s page.

There are a few important features that are not available yet, but are planned. For me, the most important of these are an expression editor and a rankings system. Lack of these things is the main thing that will keep my raid running both WoL and WL for the time being. After all, rankings are half the fun. Once these, and the other planned features are implemented, Warcraft Logs will be an amazing resource. It’s already well on its way there.

Once Warcraft Logs gets past the alpha stage, I’ll likely write up a proper guide on how to use it to analyse logs. In the meantime, you should give it a try for your next raid.

Hunter Tips for Iron Juggernaut

Iron Juggernaut is the 6th fight in SoO and is as close to a tank & spank as we’re going to get. Though he looks menacing, it’s actually one of the easier fights. Heroic mode is almost exactly the same for a ranged dps.

The fight

Iron Juggernaut is broken up into two phases. Assault phase come first and lasts 2 minutes. During this time he smacks the tanks around, casts Borer Drills (look like spikes coming out of the ground) that you should move away from, and fires Mortar Cannons which requires everyone to be spread out 8 yards apart. He also does some unavoidable damage on the raid. The most troublesome ability in Assault phase is Crawler Mines. These will spawn around the boss and will explode, doing massive damage to everyone, if they are allowed to detonate. To prevent them from detonating, they must be stomped on. Generally, whichever tank does not currently have the boss is the best option for stomping mines.  However, if they can’t get to all of them another raider, with a good damage mitigation cooldown, will need to pick up the extra(s).

Heroic only – A sawblade will be launched from the boss, and then return, doing damage to anything it hits.

The second part of the fight is a 60 second Siege mode. During this phase, the boss does not need to be tanked. Raid damage goes up in this phase immensely, and keeping yourself alive becomes much more important than damaging the boss. There is unavoidable raid-wide damage and the boss fires avoidable Demolisher Cannons. You can tell where these will land as there will be a big, red, circle. Three times during the phase, the boss will cast Shock Pulse, doing massive damage and knocking everyone back – it’s important to put your back to a wall so you don’t get knocked out of range of healers. Explosive Tar will be spread around on the ground and people will randomly be targeted by a Cutter Laser, which follows them around for a time. Do not kite the cutter laser over the tar or it will explode and probably kill most of the raid.

Heroic only – The boss is extra dangerous to the melee in this phase due to Mortar Barrage.

Talent Recommendations

Level 15 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera
Deterrence owns on this fight, and you’ll want to be able to use it a lot. Deterrence is also pretty good if you get caught off guard and get knocked back. Glyph of Deterrence is a good option as well.

Level 90 – Glaive Toss

Tips for the Fight

  • Deterrence is amazing on this fight. It will let you stomp on mines without dying. In Siege phase deterrence will completely deflect the raid-wide Seismic Activity damage and the Shock Pulse (both the damage and the knock-back).
  • If you do get knocked back too far, Disengage can help you get back faster. Or use it to get out of the Demolisher Cannon damage zones.
  • Use your big cooldowns during Assault phase.
  • Use your Healthstones! You obviously can’t Deterrence every Shock Pulse, so use a Healthstone after one of them.

Only one week until BlizzCon!

Last time I mostly hung out with my guildies in the hotel pool bar, so I didn’t get to meet too many other people, and this year I hope the change that. On Thursday I’ll definitely go to the Wowhead/WoWInsider party at the Annabella Hotel. Last time didn’t get there until really late and pretty much missed the whole party. Hopefully I get to meet a lot of people there.

There’s also going to be a joint Apotheosis/TiB/Team Wafflecast meetup at the Meeting Stone in the convention centre on Friday at 4pm. If you’re a druid-lover or just want to come say hi to me, Arielle, Tinder, Reesi, Sara, Kal or any of the other Apotheosis folks coming to the Con, you should stop by! Apotheosis even got guild shirts to wear!

On Friday night, since I’m staying at the Hilton, I’ll probably stop by the Convert to Raid Meetup, that looks like fun.
