Resto Druid BiS List – all leather edition

All WotLK raid content has been released and we’ve got nothing left to do but kill it over and over and over again until Cataclysm comes out. Now is as good a time as any to make my final best in slot list.

When Wrath raiding wraps up, I’d like my druid to look just like this. I’ve got 6 of the 16 pieces right now. Not a bad start.

Here’s the full list of what I consider to be best in slot for a resto druid with access to 25-man hard modes.

WeaponTrauma (Rotface 25H) My opinion on Trauma has certainly changed over the last few months. Originally I thought it would be impossible to make up the haste I’d miss out on by using this, but it’s not too hard at all. The proc is great and can provide up to 10% of my healing on fights like Sindragosa.

OffhandSundial of Eternal Dusk (Sindragosa 25H)

HeadSanctified Lasherweave Helmet – Though T10 is rather heavy on crit as opposed to haste, the 4-set bonus is well worth getting.

NeckBone Sentinel’s Amulet (Marrowgar 25H)

ShouldersShoulders of Frost-Tipped Thorns (Blood Prince Council 25H) *

CloakGreatcloak of the Turned Champion (Deathbringer Saurfang 25H)

ChestSanctified Lasherweave Robes *

WristsPhaseshifter’s Bracers (Halion 25H) – Leather spell power bracers are a myth.

GlovesSanctified Lasherweave Gauntlets

WaistProfessor’s Bloodied Smock – Professor Putricide 25H

LegsSanctified Lasherweave Legplates

BootsBoots of Unnatural Growth (Gunship Battle 25H) *

Ring 1Ashen Band of Endless Wisdom (ICC Rep Ring)

Ring 2Memory of Malygos (Sindragosa 25H)

Trinket 1Althor’s Abacus (Gunship Battle 25H) – The proc on this provides only 2-3% of my healing on most fights, but since it’s a smart heal it’s always useful. The nice chunk of spell power is where this trinket really shines.

Trinket 2Solace of the Defeated (Lord Jaraxxus 25H – ToTC). 168 spell power and 144 mp5 which should stay up all the time. With this trinket I find mana a non-issue on most fights which makes me unwilling to give it up. Glowing Twilight Scale would provide a lot more spell power, but I’m not a fan of on-use trinkets (even though from what I’ve read, the use effect provides a huge amount of healing). I can’t really recommend this over Solace until I’ve tried it out.

IdolIdol of the Black Widow (Frost Emblem vendor)

4.0.1 Edit: Ignore the following. With the leather specialization in play, we should never wear cloth.
* Note: If you are not adverse to wearing cloth, Sanguine Silk Robes (Blood Princes 25H) are slightly better itemized than the T10 chest. If you wear them with the T10 shoulders you will gain 13 spell power, 4 haste and 4 mp5 while casting at the cost of 26 crit rating (dependent on how you gem of course). Plague Scientist’s Boots are also an option, you’d gain spell power (as most reckless ametrines could be traded out for runed cardinal rubies) at the cost of crit and mana regen.

Now, I’ll admit that I have a few hang-ups when it comes to gear. I know there are people who disagree with me on some of these things, but I am far too stubborn to change.

  1. I hate seeing mp5 on gear. The only mp5 piece I wear is the Ashen Band of Endless Wisdom, and it’s only because of the nice spell power proc.
  2. I always gem for socket bonuses. I like when things match and the missing socket bonuses are an eyesore. Luckily most of the socket bonuses in resto druid gear are fairly good, and I need the haste from the yellow sockets anyway.
  3. I’m not overly concerned with being right at the haste cap. The setup I’ve listed here would give me 845 haste. I could replace a Reckless Ametrine with a Quick King’s Amber to bring me up to 855, but I don’t think I would ever be able to tell the difference in a raid.
  4. I will not wear cloth. I’m a complete snob about this – cloth is for priests. I am a proud leather-wearer.

Examining the Resto Druid 4T10 Bonus

I picked up my 4-piece T10 bonus a few weeks ago and I’ve had a chance to look at the amount of healing it has provided over my last three 25-man raids. As a reminder, here’s the bonus:

(4) Set: Each time your Rejuvenation spell heals a target, it has a 2% chance to jump to a new target at full duration.

My overall impression – a resounding “meh”. Here are the numbers for the individuals bosses I’ve killed:

Lord Marrowgar

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 N/A N/A N/A N/A
Raid 2 40.5% 60.8% 4.4% 75.4%
Raid 3 N/A N/A N/A N/A
Average 40.5% 60.8% 4.4% 75.4%

Unfortunately, I only have one Marrowgar kill wearing my 4-piece bonus. The first week I didn’t equip the 4th piece until after Deathwhisper and the third week I failed at turning on my combatlog at the start of the raid.

Lady Deathwhisper

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 N/A N/A N/A N/A
Raid 2 35.9% 76.7% 1.1% 93.9%
Raid 3 44.3% 84.5% 5.2% 69.2%
Average 40.1% 80.6% 3.1% 81.5%

The results for Deathwhisper seem really random. I find that there is very little damage taken in this fight, so the set bonus is unnecessary.

Deathbringer Saurfang

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 55.3% 67.3% 3.6% 80.4%
Raid 2 51.4% 69.5% 4.4% 75.4%
Raid 3 59.1% 74.3% 6.3% 66.2%
Average 52.3% 70.4% 4.7% 77%

I was surprised the numbers for this fight were this high. Since the damage is very predictable (other than Blood Nova) I usually have a rejuv rolling on everyone who is taking damage. Maybe I was being lazy in Raid 3.

Festergut

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 44.1% 58.1% 4.0% 57.8%
Raid 2 45.8% 55.7% 2.2% 81.1%
Raid 3 52.5% 56% 5.4% 73.5%
Average 47.5% 56.6% 3.9% 70.8%

The amount of healing from the bonus is fairly minimal on Fester, plus the overheal is very high compared to my regular rejuv.

Rotface

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 41.2% 74.9% 1.8% 87.2%
Raid 2 51.1% 75.5% 3.2% 93.1%
Raid 3 57.1% 80.2% 0.8% 95.6%
Average 49.8% 76.9% 1.9% 92%

For me, the set bonus has been next to useless on Rotface. Very little healing and a huge amount of overheal.

Professor Putricide

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 42.6% 59.8% 5.1% 49.3%
Raid 2 37.9% 59.2% 3.6% 70.3%
Raid 3 47.7% 62.8% 6.4% 62.8%
Average 40.5% 60.8% 5.0% 60.8%

The set bonus performs decently on Putricide. The extra HoTs are particularly useful in phase 3.

Blood Princes

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 36.3% 61.6% 6.4% 67.7%
Raid 2 39.9% 67.6% 5.0% 73.7%
Raid 3 41.2% 75.6% 3.4% 82.6%
Average 39.1% 68.3% 4.9% 74.7%

Not bad, especially when the HoT jumps to someone out of range.

Blood Queen Lana’thel

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 46.8% 35.9% 6.4% 45.7%
Raid 2 50.1% 39.7% 3.6% 45.7%
Raid 3 58.5% 57.5% 3.3% 49.4%
Average 51.8% 44.4% 4.4% 46.9%

Blood Queen is the one fight on this list where I mainly stick to the boring old Rejuv x5, WG rotation. Because of this (and the constant raid damage), I would have expected these numbers to be much higher than they are.

Dreamwalker Valithria

Healing from Rejuv Overheal Healing from Bonus Overheal
Raid 1 15.5% 30.3% 0 0
Raid 2 16.5% 29.1% 0 0
Raid 3 18.4% 36.3% 0 100%
Average 16.8% 31.9% 0 N/A

I’m one of the healers assigned to heal the dragon on this fight, so the set bonus is absolutely useless. Although I’m kind of surprised it didn’t proc at all, even though I only had one rejuv rolling at a time.

Sure, an extra 2-6% free healing is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but compared to our previous set bonuses, this one is a bit of a letdown. 4T8 was fantastic, although admittedly overpowered, and made up about 15% of my overall healing on any given fight with very little overheal. I don’t have any concrete numbers on 4T9, but in addition to the extra healing it provided it also made the crit found on our gear much more useful.

A big problem I’m finding with 4T10 is how it works. I’m finding the smart-heal aspect is actually a mixed blessing. When my role in a fight is to blanket the raid in rejuvs, I usually target the person with the lowest health with a rejuv, just like the set bonus. I’ve been finding that I will occasionally overwrite the “jumped” rejuv a split-second after it goes up. With a 1-second GCD and 25 people to throw HoTs on, my fingers are moving faster than my brain and I find it very difficult to stop myself from casting an instant heal.

Druid Gear Wish List

Here is my ideal gear for my druid. I haven’t included any hard mode drops, since we’re a while away from having access to them, but obviously would prefer those to the normal ones. I know most druids are freaking out about reaching haste cap at the moment, but for the most part, I’m still a spell power nut. I’m sitting at 653 haste at the moment, with 0 points in Celestial Focus, and I’m liking where my healing is. I’m not finding the couple tenths of a second increased GCD an issue at all.

I’m thinking that I will hang on to my 4 pieces of T9 for a while. I’m really liking crit rejuv ticks combined with the Rapid Rejuv glyph, so I’m going to need to see a significant spell power increase before I start replacing the tier slots. The tier 10 bonuses, although the clarification that the 4 piece won’t make rejuvs jump like a PoM was nice, are still completely underwhelming and I include T10 pieces in this list only because they win on the spell power front.

So, here’s my list:

WeaponDying Light (Blood Queen Lana’thel 25). Lots of spell power and a nice chuck of haste. The stam on this staff is also huge, and although not a priority, some extra survivability never hurts.

HelmSanctified Lasherweave Helmet (Frost Emblems). The helm slot is a close one. This is almost identical to Helm of the Elder Moon from Rotface, but wins because of the red socket.

NeckBone Sentinel’s Amulet (Marrowgar 25)

ShouldersSanctified Lasherweave Pauldrons (Frost Emblems)

CloakGreatcloak of the Tuned Champion (Deathbringer Saurfang 25). This is a very minor upgrade over the cloak I currently have. I’ll probably let the rest of my raid get this first, but I’d like to pick this up eventually.

ChestVestments of Spruce and Fir (Frost Emblems). The only piece of emblem gear that I was actually excited about. Direct upgrade over the piece from TotC, and my first emblem purchase.

BracersBracers of Eternal Dreaming (Valithria Dreamwalker 25)

GlovesSanctified Lasherweave Guantlets (Frost Emblems)

BeltProfesser’s Bloodied Smock (Professor Putricide 25)

PantsSancified Lasherweave Legplates (Frost Emblems)

BootsBoots of Unnatural Growth (Gunship Battle 25). Picked these up the other day. Direct upgrade over my boots from TotGC.

Ring 1Memory of Malygos (Sindragosa 25) Not much choice for spirit rings in ICC.

Ring 2Ashen Band of Unmatched Wisdom (Quest) I normally don’t like mp5, but the proc is hard to beat.

Trinket 1Solace of the Deafeated (heroic Jaraxxus 25). I don’t think I’ll be giving this up at all. With this, I can’t burn through my whole mana bar no matter how hard I try.

Trinket 2Althor’s Abacus (Gunship Battle 25). Gunship Battle has been good to me. I picked this up my first week in ICC.  It usually accounts for about 4% of my healing over a raid night, and the overheal isn’t bad.

IdolIdol of the Black Willow (Frost Emblems)

As far as Frost Emblem purchases go, my priority will be:
Vestments of Spruce and Fir – Already bought and paid for.
Idol of the Black Willow – Although it’s not a terribly impressive piece, 22 spell power is better than nothing, and I won’t be using any Emblems on Tier pieces until I get a token for the upgrades. Once I start getting tokens, the order of purchases will probably go like this:
Legs, Shoulders, Gloves, Helm

30-second Rant

I have to complain about the looks of T10 for just a minute.  I can’t help it.  Despite the big spell power and haste increase I saw when I replaced my TotC chest with the new Emblem one, I couldnt help but be a little disappointed at how ugly it was.  The previous tiers all had nice colours and fine detail.  This new set looks like a big, blurry mess.
