Best 100 Games of All Time

This week Edge magazine put out a list of the best 100 games of all time. The list has caused some stir. Partially because most of the games are really recent. Partially because as far as I can see, the list is completely without context or explanation. And partially because “best” is a totally subjective term and the whole idea of the list is stupid.

However… who doesn’t love stupid lists? So, I’m making my own. I dunno if there even are 100 games I can apply the word best to, but let’s try!

Well, what do you know – I got to 100. Honestly, after the top 30 or so the order doesn’t mean a whole lot. And after 60 or 70 I’m just listing games I liked a fair bit.

What do you think? Any omissions (that are likely omitted because I haven’t played them). Any surprises?

  2. That’s a pretty neat list – I’ve enjoyed most of those that I’ve played, and have intentions towards most of the others. One thing I’m curious about – what determines whether a game gets counted as part of a series or not?

    • That’s a little fuzzy. In general, I put it as a series if they’re all very similar and equally enjoyable. Like Mass Effect – the 3 games are all part of one story and though there are gameplay refinements, the gameplay is similar. Whereas the Dragon Age games are looked at separately because the story is different in each one and the gameplay really changes.

However, a couple don’t fit this. The Witcher games change quite a bit in gameplay, but I had too hard a time deciding which one I liked best so I put them all together.

  3. “Partially because as far as I can see, the list is completely without context or explanation.”

I believe that in the (special edition of the) magazine itself it explains the context of the list at the start.

Its a good list, although you missed my personal number 1 favourite game series – which is Elder Scrolls (or its there and I’m blind). I’ve put more hours into Skyrim than any other game I’ve ever played – modded to hell and back of course. Plus 100’s of hours into all the others in the series over my gaming life (MMO version excepted. Its MY world, I don’t want company, thank you very much.).

Ocarina of Time seems to be in everyones ‘top games’ and yet I’ve never played it 🙁

  6. How about the elephant in the room?

I noticed WoW wasn’t on your list (I had to scan it a couple of times to verify).

I know you’re not playing anymore, but surely it deserves a spot in the Top 10 or 20.

Also, hi! I still check out your blog occasionally and its good to see you’re doing well.

    • Hi Merk! Long time no talk.

WoW is a tough one. There are times when I think it deserves a spot in the top, but it’s such a constantly evolving game. While TBC WoW might be top 10, I don’t think Vanilla or even Cata would be. I also don’t think I’d ever recommend someone play WoW (or any MMO really), whereas I would recommend the others on my list.

  7. Really cool list and a fair few i haven’t played yet so that’s a job for the weekend haha! Reading the comments I have to agree on not recommending WoW even tho I will disagree with vanilla but only because personally i thought it was the best period along with some raids from tbc & wotlk (ulduar is possibly my most favorite raid in the game). I wouldn’t recommend it from the standpoint that it takes away from other things and you have to invest time to heavily. Thanks, Tom.

    • I thought vanilla WoW was a big pain in the butt. I know everyone had their own favourite era, but everything took so long originally.
