Gaming Questionnaire

Once upon a time, way back in 2009, I started this blog. The thing that pushed me into creating a WoW blog and became my second post ever was Miss Medicina’s Healer Questionnaire.

Since I’m done with WoW, and trying to reinvent Cannot be Tamed as a source for information and entertainment about all video games, I thought I’d start my own questionnaire about gaming. Hopefully you’ll be interested in filling out the questionnaire as well, and we’ll all get to discover new bloggers, gamers, and learn more about our current gaming friends.

Post this questionnaire with your answers on your blog or in the comments if you don’t have one. Be sure to let me know when you’ve answered, I’ll be posting links to responses below.

  1. When did you start playing video games?

  3. 1. Started playing videogames in the early 90s (age 10-11ish). First console I played was the NES that my cousin had.
    2. First game was Super Mario 3 on the NES.
    3. PC or console….hmmm, I think I will go console over PC, but not by much.
    4. I will go with Playstation.
    5. Best game I’ve played will have to go to Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube AND Tales of the Abyss on PS2.
    6. Worst game goes to…Beyblade for the PS1
    7. Popular game that I didn’t like goes to…I guess Minecraft.
    8. Poorly received game that I liked goes to…cant think of one right now…
    9. Game Genres.. action, adventure, rpg.
    10. Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehogs
    11. my “perfect” game should have, action, great storyline, immerses you into the world and leaves you wanting more, and makes you want to do finish the game multiple times.
    12. video game crushes on….Luca (Ar Tonelico 2, PS2), Millenia(Grandia 2, Dreamcast)
    13. Best game music goes to: Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, whether you like the games or not, Sega always delivers top notch soundtracks for their Sonic games!
    14. One memorable moment ingame was when I was playing Ar Tonelico 2 on the PS2, and two of the main characters resulted being long lost sisters!!
    15. scariest moment in a game.. can’t think of one..
    16. A heart-wrenching moment in a game for me has been while playing Alterier Iris 3 on the PS2 and one of the main characters sacrifices herself to save you and your friends from death.. :(
    17. Favorite sites about games…I do regularly watch the youtube channel called MMOHuts. They tend to focus on news of F2P games.
    18. Last game I’ve finished was Wild Arms 5 on PS2.
    19. Future releases I’m excited about…. Warlords of Draenor, Fifa 15, new Sonic games. Haven’t kept up with what is coming out soon..
    20. Yes, I identify myself as a gamer.
    21. I play video games because its a way of life….ok, because it is fun.

    • I should try out some of the Atelier Iris games, I hear good things, and I’m always on the search for a new JRPG that I’ll like.

  4. I really want to do this poll but it might take me the course of a couple of my own blog posts to answer it all. I am unfortunately wordy and I know I will end up talking at length about a number of the points :)

  5. 1. When I was like 3 or 4? x86 and monochrome screen.
    2. Probably Digger. My dad really enjoyed it and it was a fun game to both spectate and play.
    3. PC Master Race.
    4. None of the above? I mean I’ve never really liked Nintendo’s policies on things like Youtube content, and MS repeatedly fails at providing a platform that people actually want. I guess that leaves Playstation.
    5. Ohhhhhhhh man. I don’t know if I can narrow it down to a single title. If I had to pick only one it would probably be WoW.
    6. I legitimately can’t think of one. I know I’ve played horrible games in the past, but I can’t remember any of them – which probably speaks to their horribleness.
    7. The Walking Dead. It just didn’t do it for me.
    8. Depends what “poorly received” means. I really like Game Dev Tycoon even if it is simple, but that may not be “poor” enough for the purposes of this question.
    9. RPG.
    10. FemShep
    11. Tactical Co-Op RPG Shooter…wait I just described The Division didn’t I?
    12. Liara. Also Morrigan.
    13. Overall music would have to go to ME3. However some titles have amazing tracks – Particularly Halo, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Skyrim.
    14. The first time I witnessed Mordin die in ME3 was really horrible. I did not take that well.
    15. I dunno, games don’t really “scare” me. Plus I just genuinely dislike horror as a genre – it doesn’t matter the medium.
    16. After the original ending to ME3 I was pretty messed up since I thought the galaxy had pretty much been destroyed in order to take the Reapers with it.
    17. PCGamer and Polygon. I don’t generally read anything else unless it’s for a specific game (like WoW). I like what you’re doing though.
    18. Far Cry 3 a couple of months ago. Working on Fallout 3 right now.
    19. Dragon Age Inquisition, The Division
    20. Yes.
    21. Because they’re fun, and I find a more enjoyable medium that other forms of entertainment. Plus I’ve made so many friends because of games that I wouldn’t have otherwise made.

    • Mordin dying was going to be my answer to 16. It was a toss up between that and saying goodbye to Garrus. His death was completely unexpected for me.

    1980

    3. PC or Console?
    PC
    4. XBox, PlayStation, or Wii?
    XBox
    5. What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
Baldur’s Gate (all 3 titles, considered as one game)
    6. What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
WoW: I made it to level 2 and had to uninstall. Candy-coloured children’s game.
    7. Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
    WoW.
    8. Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
9Dragons: Korean import MMO grinder – liked it enough to meet my wife there! (or maybe, that’s why I’m still fond of it)
    9. What are your favourite game genres?
    RPG/MMO
    10. Who is your favourite game protagonist?
    me, in an MMO
    11. Describe your perfect video game.
Baldur’s Gate, The Big Picture mod.
    12. What video game character do have you have a crush on?
    err, what?
    13. What game has the best music?
    Europa Universalis IV
    14. Most memorable moment in a game:
Killing The Watcher for the first time in LOTRO
    15. Scariest moment in a game:
I don’t tend to play scary games, but The Secret World has a bunch of scary moments.

Imoen admitting she loves you, the Imoen Romance mod, Baldur’s Gate series
    17. What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
too many to add? RockPaperShotgun; TAGN; Inventory Full; For the Record as four
    18. What’s the last game you finished?
you don’t finish MMOs :) either ESO (I got sick of it, it’s not very good) or Jade Empire (I’m working my way again through the Bioware RPGs this year)
    19. What future releases are you most excited about?
Pillars of Eternity: fuck me if it doen’t look exactly like a fixed-up version of the original Baldur’s Gate
    20. Do you identify as a gamer?
    Of course, and proudly.
    21. Why do you play video games?
Fun, enjoyment, relaxation, mastery: the usual reasons. Ultimately, to learn. Play is a form of learning, one of the most effective, and gaming is organised play.

    • Pillars of Eternity looks great. I hadn’t heard of it before. Have you tried Divinity: Original sin? It’s similar and I’ve been playing a lot of it, it’s really good.

  17. When did you start playing video games?
At the age of 6 in 1983.

What is the first game you remember playing?
    Android 2 for ZX spectrum.

    PC or Console?
PC and always PC. The only time I made an exception, was for PS2. I have nothing against consoles though, as I have borrowed consoles from friends and played some exclusive titles there.

    Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii?
Truthfully none of the above. Nintendo has never been available officially in my country and the other two treated us poorly, despite a huge game purchasing population. (I am from Mumbai India).

What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
That’s a broad question, but if I had to boil down, it would be a 4 way tie between GTA IV San andreas for the comic value, Elder scrolls oblivion for the questing, Deus EX HR and Mass effect 1. I would put WoW in there, having been around since the start but that’s a moot point statement.

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
Have to pick two here again. The crow city of angels and Ashes Cricket 2013

Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
    Counter strike.

Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
Duke Nukem Forever. It was stupidly hilarious.

What are your favourite game genres?
    Stealth, sci-fi, spy-related, RPGS, MMOs.

Who is your favourite game protagonist?
Adam Jensen of Deus EX HR.

    Describe your perfect video game.
No such thing. Games are constantly evolving and changing as per societal reflections.

What video game character do have you have a crush on?
Tali from ME 2. Smart, driven, takes no shit from anyone and is a force to reckon with.

What game has the best music?
    Elder scrolls Skyrim

Most memorable moment in a game:
World 30-40 kill of a Sunwell boss.

    Scariest moment in a game:
The ending levels of System Shock 2

Most heart-wrenching moment in a game:
Surprisingly killing Illidian in Burning crusade. I had adored the character and always thought he could have been redeemed.

What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
    Rockpapershotgun

What’s the last game you finished?
    Wolfenstein: The new order

What future releases are you most excited about?
Nothing right now. Taking a break from gaming for a year, to catch up on other activities.

Do you identify as a gamer?
    Yes very much so.

Why do you play video games?
I love the flights of fantasy they bring and they are the best kind of release for me, from other stresses.

  18. Aargh sorry for the bloody mess. Spacing broke apart and i am unable to edit it, to fix the mess it’s made.

  19. 1. When did you start playing video games?
When I was about 6, maybe even younger. It’s been a constant.

    2. What is the first game you remember playing?
Joust on the Atari 2600 and in the arcades. I’m old-school.

    3. PC or Console?
Grew up with consoles, prefer PC now.

    4. XBox, PlayStation, or Wii?
PlayStation. The Xbox controller is so big and clunky, it makes a lot of games extremely hard for me to play (small hands + RSI = trololol). And Wii gives me a bad case of “Oh God why do I have to do this right-handed whyyyyy” rantings, so I don’t play it much except for the occasional visit to the WiiFit.

    5. What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
I’ve played too many to name a specific one as best. LOL. But the original NES Tetris, FF4, and FF6 are my very faves.

    6. What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
No real stinkers come to mind. Except Cataclysm, the expansion that nearly made me quit WoW due to story rage.

    7. Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
Hearthstone. I just cannot get interested in it. Sorry, Blizzard. :(

    8. Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
    None in particular.

    9. What are your favourite game genres?
    Puzzle and RPG.

    10. Who is your favourite game protagonist?
    FemShep, Terra from FF6.

    11. Describe your perfect video game.
Female/minority protagonist, easy-to-master controls, no racist/misogynist/homophobic/slur crap, strong story, no “romances affect the game” weirdness (not saying no romances, it just annoys me when you HAVE to be in a romance to progress the story. What if my character wants to be single?). I’d even fight through my ineptitude at action/shooters to play that game.

    12. What video game character do have you have a crush on?
    None really.

    13. What game has the best music?
    The Mass Effect trilogy.

    14. Most memorable moment in a game:
The opera scene in FF6. And the Golbez reveal in FF4.

    15. Scariest moment in a game:
Watching Shepard get sucked into space in the ME2 intro. I needed a few minutes to recover after that.

    16. Most heart-wrenching moment in a game:
Would’ve liked to run tests on the seashells. :(

    17. What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
I don’t really read any regularly.

    18. What’s the last game you finished?
Katamari Forever. (I’m a bad gamer, I don’t finish most of them because I always get stuck.)

    19. What future releases are you most excited about?
Nothing really :( *fervently wishes for more Katamari*

    20. Do you identify as a gamer?
Yes. A very casual one without a lot of skills, but yes.

    21. Why do you play video games?
Escapism. It’s fun to imagine myself as the protagonist of the game I’m playing (which is why games that don’t let you play as a female character bother me). Also the gratification when you pop an achievement, and the sheer joy of killing internet dragons (I’m primarily a WoW player, so internet dragons factor in a lot).

    • Sig, you really prefer LOTRO when it had that absolutely stupid Radiance Grind?
LOTRO was only good PRE Moria. Shadows of Angmar ftw.

And wasn’t Spore actually well received at the time? I;m sure it won quite a few awards.

  24. When did you start playing video games?
Probably about 1989 when I was about 5 years of age and my Mother and Father bought me an old Atari 2600.

What is the first game you remember playing?
    Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Centipede

    PC or Console?
I play both PC and Consoles but my Heart will always belong to PC gaming

    XBox, PlayStation, or Wii?
PlayStation without a doubt. Microsoft is satans company and wjile the Wii is fun, it’s not enough to hold me.

What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
The Last of Us. Everyone in the world should play this game.

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
Skyrim. It’s just the same old shit repeated over and over and over and over and over.

Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
Skyrim. Good Graphics can only get you so far when the story is shit. Guild wars 2 as well… It’s too cartoony and boring after a while. There is only so much zerging you can do before banging your head on the desk.

Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
Difficult one since I don’t really look at previews/reviews.

What are your favourite game genres?
RPG but not MMORPG. the standard single player offline one. MMOS are spoiled by other people being there :P

Who is your favourite game protagonist?
    Cid in Final Fantasy VII

    Describe your perfect video game.
    The Last of Us….

What video game character do have you have a crush on?
Really?? Don’t confuse me with a 15 year old fanboy kid thanks.

What game has the best music?
Without a doubt, The Witcher II. I often found myself using the game music cd (with enhanced edition) for background music while I play D&D.

Most memorable moment in a game.
In lotro. The evening before the switch over from the old CodeMasters servers to Turbines servers, My Kinship decided to play a prank on people in the prancing pony by doing the forgotten temple instance and capturing level 65 worms from that instance and dropping them into the Prancing Pony. The results are Hilarious… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOlUPj5NePE (link to video on Youtube)

    Scariest moment in a game.
To be honest, nothing has really scared me in a video game but the demo of P.T. on the PlayStation 4 is probably the closest I’ve came to being scared. On a brighter note, P.T. is a playable teaser for the new Silent Hills game which looks like it’ll be amazing.

Most heart-wrenching moment in a game:
Aeris dying in FFVII … if you didn’t shed a tear, you don’t have a heart.

What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
I don’t really look to websites for information on games. If I like the look of one I’ll buy it.

What’s the last game you finished?
The Last of us: Remastered (or P.T. Demo if you count demos)

What future releases are you most excited about?
    Silent HIlls, Shadow-Realms

Do you identify as a gamer?
No I don’t. I identify myself as someone who enjoys games but it’s your stereotypical “Gamer”

Why do you play video games?
Because I have some spare time in my life when I’m not out with my mates, and TV is shit

    • I’m also not big on Skyrim (the whole Elder Scrolls series actually). There’s so much to do and it’s so open that it feels directionless.

      • for me it’s more that it’s just walk, dungeon, walk, dungeon, walk, dungeon… pretty boring after a while. I came to that conclusion after spending upwards of 250+ hours playing it.

  31. All i have is time at work, so why not!

    1. Not sure what age i started, but as soon as i had proper motor functions i was playing! My father works for NCR, and back in the day they used to make computers. So i had my own PC with a couple Windows 95 games.

    2. First game i remember playing was an Old Jurassic Park game for the PC by OCEAN. It was a semi-top down action/adventure game mixed in with a few FPS levels. Loved it!

    3. PC Master-Race

    4. None! Well i have a Wii, but never use it. I do bust it out once in a blue moon to replay the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

    5. Tough one, close between Bioshock Infinite and Prime, but going to have to go with the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

    6. I tend to avoid bad games, but the one i purchased believing it would be good was Warhammer 40k: Fire Warrior. Terrible.

    7. Darksiders II (loved the first) and Dishonored.

8 Nothing rings a bell here, i know there have been a couple, but i can’t think of them at the moment.

    9. Don’t really have a favourite genre, if the game is good then it doesn’t matter.

    10. Hmmm, not sure i have one. Really liked Ezio and the progression of his story and was pretty sad to see him go. Afterall we got to see his life through from early stages to late. Felt like i connected with him and was really rooting for him!

    11. I enjoy video games that give the most bang for your buck. Skyrim, Farcry 3, WoW, D3, all of these games that have tons of content and sometimes no end are my prime choices.

    12. Booker Dewitt.

    13. Prime Trilogy has some amazing original music, very eerie and atmospheric. Assassin’s Creed 1/2 and Brotherhood also have amazing tracks. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within as well. I have all of the above on my iPhone to listen to :D

    14. Really just any game with a plot twist you don’t see coming even if you try and reference older game stories. All of the Portal series has unforgettable moments. Unable to narrow it down to one.

    15. I tend to stay away from scary games/movies as they just stress me out >.< I do watch playthroughs from time to time of ones i think are interesting (Outlast, Amnesia). If i did run into a scary moment i have probably suppressed it from my memory.

    16. Heart-wrenching moment… definitely Bioshock Infinite when Songbird re-captures Elizabeth and we see what the future became when Booker never made it :(((( right in the feels.

    17. Don't really read about games these days. Used to use Gamespot a lot, but I've since moved away from reading other peoples "ratings" on games.

    18. Last game i finished was Farcry 3.

    19. Farcry 4, a new Metroid game, Unity (although i doubt Unity can best Black Flag).

    20. I used to, but i hardly think that's who i am anymore. I don't avidly buy games, i don't research what's coming out, and i only ever buy non-blizzard games on Steam Sales. I have little time to play games outside of work/Raiding/Spending time with the GF, but i don't miss the "gamer" life all that much, even when i have free time and i see a list of great games i have yet to complete (looking at you Arkham Origins), i just don't have the same excitement or drive as i used to to actually play them.

    21. Fun i guess, i don't play games just to burn time if i'm bored. I play them if i really enjoy them and want to spend time in my short day to play them.

  32. When did you start playing video games? – 1989, when I was 3. My parents and I were visiting my uncle and he had an NES. He showed me Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt.

What is the first game you remember playing? – Duck Hunt on the NES.

PC or Console? – I prefer gaming on a PC.

XBox, PlayStation, or Wii? – I own a Wii, but it ended up turning into a Netflix machine.

What’s the best game you’ve ever played? – Cyborg Justice on the Sega Genesis/MasterDrive. Its a beat-em-up game where you play as an astronaut-turned-robot. The game allows you to customize your weapons and… well, this video gives the game more… justice than I can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HPRXv-e9IE

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played? – A 3D-platformer called Rascal for the PS1. The camera was very sluggish, which made a lot of the platforming much more difficult than it needed to be, and I seem to remember general input lag with the game. Super Mario 64 came out about 2 and a half years before this and I don’t recall having similar issues with it. Nothing burns my game biscuits quicker than a wonky camera in a 3D game.

Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like. – GoldenEye 007 on the N64. It was my first time playing an FPS on a console and I found aiming in the game just so awkward and tedious with the Nintendo 64 controller. Also, the turd behavior my friends would exhibit while playing in multiplayer matches ruined quite a bit of this game for me.

Name a game that was poorly received that you really like. – I’m not really sure that I have one. Maybe the MegaMan Battle Network series of games on the GameBoy Advance? I found those enjoyable.

What are your favorite game genres? – I’m a big fan of Tactical RPGs and Strategy games with Final Fantasy Tactics being my favorite.

Who is your favourite game protagonist? – Crono from Chrono Trigger. Helps his friends, saves the world, and doesn’t complain about it.

Describe your perfect video game. – Something that my friends and I can enjoy together. Genre wouldn’t really matter, as long as we’re all having fun.

What video game character do have you have a crush on? – I don’t really have one to be completely honest. Those types of feelings just haven’t crossed my mind with any video game characters.

What game has the best music? – I’m not a big fan of the overall story with this series, but I really enjoy the soundtrack of Double Dragon Neon. It has 80’s pop and light rock elements that I find really catchy.

Most memorable moment in a game: For me, probably the Wrathgate cinematic in Wrath of the Lich King. I wasn’t expecting something like that to occur within WoW.

Scariest moment in a game: This is very recent, but more or less Five Nights at Freddy’s. All of it. The atmosphere. The animatronics. The… music… Please, make it stop…

Most heart-wrenching moment in a game: The last 20 mins. of Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals on the SNES. Without going into major spoilers, something happens that doesn’t usually occur with game protagonists in an RPG setting.

What are your favourite websites/blogs about games? – As far as websites and blogs go, I don’t really know of any that are just “general” game stuff vs. WoW-focused ones. I make a lot of my game buying decisions from what my friends seem to like and enjoy.

What’s the last game you finished? – Yikes, most of the stuff I’ve played in the last 8 years or so has all been open-ended like Skyrim, Fallout, and MMOs. The last game I probably “finished” was MegaMan Starforce 3 for the NDS. Completed the weapon library and beat all of the hidden bosses.

What future releases are you most excited about? – Civilization: Beyond Earth in October, and the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remakes coming in November.

Do you identify as a gamer? – Not really. I just think playing video games is par for the course as someone who exists in the year 2014.

Why do you play video games? – As an escape, really. Not much more to say there without going into too much personal detail.

    • Five Nights at Freddy’s looks terrifying. All I did was look at the screenshots on the Steam page, and then went “nope”.

  61. When did you start playing video games?
    Around the age of 6-7.

What is the first game you remember playing?
tLoZ: A link to the Past, on the SNES.

    PC or Console?
    Both.

    XBox, PlayStation, or Wii?
They all have great games, but i’ll choose Wii as it’s the one i’ve spent the most time with.

What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
I have an easy answer for this, but a more difficult answer is Metroid: Other M. It’s the game i resent the most.

Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
The Assassin’s creed series. I’m completely uninterested in those games.

Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

What are your favourite game genres?
Adventure games, i suppose. But i enjoy FPS, RPGs, platformers, some racing games.

Who is your favourite game protagonist?
    Samus Aran.

    Describe your perfect video game.
World of warcraft if it had skipped the cataclysm revamp, scrapped the alternate timeline lore from patch 4.3, kept Garrosh as warchief and focused on a South seas expansion instead of Warlords of Draenor.

What video game character do you have a crush on?
Midna from LoZ: Twilight Princess. She’s a cutie.

What game has the best music?
Machinarium. You should youtube search Mr.handagote, it’s a track from that game.

Most memorable moment in a game:
Maiden Astraea’s ”boss fight” in Demon’s Souls.

    Scariest moment in a game:
The Prison chapter in Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Most heart-wrenching moment in a game:
Kafei & Anju reuniting in Majora’s Mask.

What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
Youtube is probably the best. Lots of amazing content creators.

What’s the last game you finished?
    Dark Souls 2

What future releases are you most excited about?
Zelda for the Wii U, Splatoon, Smash bros for Wii U.

Do you identify as a gamer?
Not ashamed of being called a gamer, but i don’t label myself, no.

Why do you play video games?
It’s just entertainment, but it’s the most stimulating form of entertainment i’ve encountered. I’m not passively just watching like i do when i watch TV, and i don’t need to be completely focused like when i’m reading a book. I can’t read a book properly when listening to music or thinking about other things for example.

    • I could never get all the way through Majora’s Mask. I remember loving it at first, but then the time aspect started driving me crazy. I loved all the NPCs and interactions in town though.

  67. As requested:

When did you start playing video games?
    When I was 4-5

What is the first game you remember playing?
Altered Beast on the Sega Master system.

    PC or Console?
    PC

    XBox, PlayStation, or Wii?
    Playstation

What’s the best game you’ve ever played?
Tomb Raider 2013 remake or NHL 199_. They were a annual staple in my gaming diet.

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played?
There are a lot of “bad” games that you shut off immediately and not give the time of day. However, a bad game I’ve actually sat down and put solid time into only to have a bad taste left in my mouth would be Ninja Turtles on the NES. The first one.

Name a game that was popular/critically adored that you just didn’t like.
I’m more of a run and gun type of guy, so the games like Metal Gear and Assassins Creed, where you sit in bushes and hide behind walls really don’t do it for me. Metal Gear Solid is considered one of the best games of all time, yet I just can’t do it.

Name a game that was poorly received that you really like.
It appears most of my favourites have been poorly reviewed. Deadpool obviously comes to mind. Amazing Spider-Man 2 most recently as well.

What are your favourite game genres?
    Hack and Slash

Who is your favourite game protagonist?
    Mega Man

    Describe your perfect video game.
I enjoyed the Deadpool tie in with the action platform, but I enjoy the Hack and Slash genre more. My ideal game would either be a Marvel Hack and Slash (Wolverine Origins with updated graphics) or something similar to the Marvel ARPG they recently launched in a Diablo style Marvel game.

What video game character do have you have a crush on?
This Jasyla guy is kinda cute

What game has the best music?
    Mega Man 2

Most memorable moment in a game:
The ending of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

    Scariest moment in a game:
Stupid dogs jumping out the windows in the first Resident Evil games.

Most heart-wrenching moment in a game:
Probably the last phase during our first Heroic Lich-King kill. As much as I’ve tried to sway away from answering these questions with cliche Wow answers, that moment, hoping and praying that the tank didn’t die in the last phase, will forever be burned into my brain.

What are your favourite websites/blogs about games?
    IGN Gamespot MMo-champ Hearthpwn

What’s the last game you finished?
    Max Payne 3

What future releases are you most excited about?
Call of Duty and NBA 2K15

Do you identify as a gamer?
    Yea

Why do you play video games?
Because I can only sleep 8 hours a day

  68. 1. It was probably around 1990. I remember playing a limited number of educational games on a loud yet mesmerizing machine.

    2. Reader Rabbit but Wolftenstein 3D is definitely my first vivid memory of a true video game obsession.

    3. PC.

    4. Playstation.

    5. Diablo II

    6. There was a Half Life 2 mod that surfaced right around the time that CS was picking up some serious competitive steam. It was lauded as the next great mod when in reality, it was barely even in an alpha stage at release.

    7. The Halo series.

    8. Galaxy 5000 on Nintendo. Amazing!

    9. MMORPG and RPG or FPS with RPG elements.

    10. My afro jacked brutha in GTA San Andreas.

    11. My perfect video game has a clear competitive edge to it where skill is acquired through intelligent decision making and being well versed in multiplr strategies. There is some sort of status ranking system that players strive to be on top of and there are rewards for those who reach the top.

    12. I have never felt romantically inclined to any video game character. Although as hormonal teenager, I imagine Lara Croft or any sexually vivacious spawn of horny male devs sparked some kind of arousal.

    13. GTA San Andreas

    14. The entirety of Bioshock Infinite and the subtle ties to the death of American exceptionalism. I wished I was still doing my undergrad so I could write a paper on it.

    15. When my Diablo II account was banned for maphacking. Towards the end of my tenure as an avid player I began using a map hack to farm on my sorceress. Another awful moment was when my friend used my 5 digit ID steam account to cheat in CS and had it banned. As far as being scared from gameplay I suppose the first time I played Fear in a dark room it was a little jarring.

    16. I have never felt heart wrenched from a video game story. I felt heart wrenched when an idiotic paladin took the trinket from twins in ToTC I had been waiting weeks for. It still breaks my heart to this day.

    17. Mmorpg.com, hearthpwn.com, gamespot.com

    18. Bioshock Infinite

    19. Dragon Age Inquisition, Everquest Next, the new IP Blizzard MMO that was scrapped.

    20. I am not a traditional gamer. I generally only play games with a competitive edge and even then I hate COD LOL DOTA etc. Blizzard has been my #1 since the original Diablo and Starcraft. But on the odd occasion a game like GTA, Bioshock or Metro comes along and grabs me.

    21. To escape from the mundane and challenge my mind.

  69. 1. In 1983 or so, five years old.

    2. Space Invaders on the Atari 2600.

    3. Both.

    4. Xbox.

    5. Starflight. Binary Systems/EA, 1985.

    6. Two Worlds. Reality Pump, 2007.

    7. Spore. Maxis, 2008. Complete phone-in on evolution.

    8. eXperience112. Lexis Numerique, 2008.

    9. Grand strategy. All others are one-off favorites regardless of genre.

    10. Gordon Freeman.

    11. Entertaining, educational, refreshing, timeless.

    12. Can’t think of one.

    13. Dune. Cryo Interactive, 1992.

    14. Escaping from Halo on the final, bareknuckle Warthog ride, Legendary difficulty.

    15. “Sensors indicate unidentified object” alarm, startling prelude to a deep space encounter, in Starflight.

    16. Discovering the truth of the circumstances of Emmy Malin, unwilling agent of Malygos.

    17. MMO-Champion for news. Not reading too much else right now besides Eight Years in Azeroth.

    18. Mass Effect 2.

    19. The next World of Warcraft expansion. The next Elder Scrolls.

    20. No. Possibly owing to that I’m a nerd, not a geek.

    21. It’s use of time that I find is constructive, if virtually, and provides agency opposition and random elements impossible when playing make-believe as a child.

  70. Pingback: The “Gamer” Label | Thinking Play

  71. 1)1990, maybe? My first experience playing video games was playing Super Mario Bros. on my godmother’s NES. I forget which exact year that was, but 1990 was the year I got a Game Boy for Christmas due to wanting to play vidya games, so I’m pretty sure I was introduced to them in 1990.

2)Super Mario Bros. The first game system I actually *owned* was a Game Boy, which I got with Tetris (pack-in) and Super Mario Land.

3)Console. I play PC games that are only on PC (ie WoW) but most if it’s on a console I own I play the console version.

4)Playstation, mostly. I own a Wii U and decent gaming PC, though. I’m a Playstation guy overall because Xbos has never and will never happen in Japan and I’m a weeaboo who likes to play Japanese games that wind up being PS exclusives because of that.

5)There are a lot of games that I’d say are “objectively” better, but if I had to pick one I’d say that my favorite game is Ar Tonelico 2. Again, that’s if I absolutely had to pick one- there are a lot of games I fucking love, and a lot of games that are objectively “better” than AT2.

6)Fuck, I don’t even know. The worst game I ever played would probably be a game I don’t even remember.

7)GTA3 and GTA:Vice City, because I played those games and got bored of them pretty quick. I’m planning on giving GTA5 a shot when it hits PS4, though.

8)Lots of “weeaboo” games, honestly. Those are usually games that “mainstream” reviewers hate that I fucking love. The games Gust makes (Ar Tonelico/Nosurge, the Atelier series) are decent examples of this. Tales of Xillia (and its sequal, which I’m in the middle of right now) are also good examples.

    9)RPGs, Visual Novels.

10)Croix from Ar Tonelico 2. It’s a shame that he’s less relevant to that game’s story than the protagonists of Ar Tonelico 1 and 3.

11)Something that has both a story and cast I love and gameplay I love. That seems like a very generic answer, but most of the games I like either have a great story/cast I love and gameplay I either dislike or am just ‘meh’ on (most Gust games) or a story I don’t give a shit about but gameplay I like (WoW.)

12)Oh christ there are so many characters, most of which are from Gust games (for specific examples: Totori, Willbell, Cloche, Finnel, Aurica.) I think my first real vidya crush was Marle from Chrono Trigger (which was my favorite game when I was 10,) though- what’s funny is that these days I’m more of a Lucca guy.

13)The Ar Tonelico/Nosurge series, specifically the vocal tracks, no fucking question.

14)I’ll go ahead and pick a weird one: Dragon Quest 7, a game that in retrospect I don’t even think was very good overall, but gave me some memorable moments.

For those who aren’t familiar with the game- in DQ7 the world starts out as a single island, and you go back in time to other continents, solve their problems, and then they come back in the present and you check out what’s happening with them in your time.

In one scenario, the deal in the past is that the village priest or whatever (it’s been a while, I forget some of the details) was turned into a monster. The rest of the villiage thinks that the “monster” killed the priest and is now living in his house and wants to kill the “monster” in retaliation. Being the heroes, you realize that the “monster” is actually a good guy and do some stuff to restore him back to his human form. The villagers proceed to be really sorry for almost killing the priest and promise they’ll pass the story of how you prevented them from fucking everything up down to their descendents.

Fast-forward to the present, you go to the village and find out that the story they believe is that the adventurers from outside (ie YOU) were the ones that wanted to kill the priest and the villagers were the good guys who wanted to protect him and make him not a monster anymore. You proceed to find evidence of the real story with the help of some kids in the village, and present it to the village elder… who proceeds to destroy said evidence. Because he didn’t want to hurt the villagers feelings by letting them know the truth that their ancestors were the bad guys, or something like that.

I wanted to fucking kill that guy. Like, really, if this was a game like Skyrim or Fallout where I could do that, I’d have murdered him right there and then, and if that made me incapable of finishing the main story then so fucking be it. Instead I had to settle for breaking every pot in his house (most of which I broke by throwing at him.) Like, the story ended on a “well the kids know so eventually the truth will be known to everyone” note but still, fuck that guy.

There’s another scenario in that game I liked where you are similarly supposed to prevent villagers from fucking everything up by killing a monster, but in that one you can actually fail and screw yourself out of whatever content the present-day village offers. Overall I feel like Dragon Quest 7 was a decent game in the story/scenario level, it just had shitty outdated mechanics.

15)Exploring ghoul-infested ruins in Fallout 3/Fallout: New Vegas. Games that are “supposed” to be scary don’t hit me as hard as those did.

16)Visual Novel example: Fate/Stay Night, Heaven’s Feel route, Rin and Sakura’s moment towards the very end.
Non-VN example: Ar Tonelico 2, Infel’s moment in the ending. Can’t go into more detail without spoiling it.

    17)NeoGAF, Twitter, Reddit.

    18)Atelier Escha & Logy.

19)Ar Nosurge, Danganronpa 2, Final Fantasy XV, WoW:WoD.

    20)Abso-goddamned-loutely, yes.

21)Because they’re fun, and to quote K-ON!, fun things are fun. Sometimes they’re fun because they make me feel like a badass (ex: the Assassin’s Creed games.) Sometmes they’re fun because the characters or stories are fun to watch (ex: Atelier and Tales series.) Sometimes they’re fun because they have solid mechanics and mastering said mechanics is fun (ex: WoW.) Games make me happy, and that’s why I play them.

But really though, if there’s one game I want to inspire you or anyone else to play with this post, it’s Ar Tonelico 2. AT1 is pretty good, AT3 (AKA Ar Tonelico Qoga) is the worst but still worth playing if you liked 1 and 2, but AT2 is a game with pretty solid gameplay (which is pretty much a rip-off of Valkyrie Profile, another awesome game you should play,) a mediocre localization, but a pretty good story/cast (in which the male protagonist is sidelined by the female leads by the halfway pint) and mind-blowingly amazing music (both the vocal and instrumentals, in AT2’s case- AT1 and 3 have great vocal tracks but ‘decent’ non-vocal tracks overall.)

    • Addenum to number 10: the boss from Saints’ Row 3/4. But since I know you’ve been playing SR4 lately you probably already knew that the boss/president was awesome.

      • The boss is great. This game just continues to delight me. From hearing “What is Love” while escaping the alien base to “romancing” Kinzie, everything is awesome.

    • And for more comments re:Ar Tonelico 2, since I don’t feel like I communicated everything earlier (blame the booze): It’s a game with a male protagonist at first, but by the halfway point the female leads are the most important characters and the male lead(Croix) is just there to cheer them on and help them kill things.

      Also while I love all the waifus in that game CYNTHIA IS THE BEST WAIFU AND IT’S A SHAME THAT SHE DOESN’T HAVE HER OWN ENDING ;_;

      • I’ll try to find a copy of Ar Tonelico, I do really like JRPGs, but I haven’t found any I’ve been that interested in lately.

        • Oh hey, I remember getting drunk and making these comments!

Yeah, I fucking love Ar Tonelico- as a warning, there is a fair amount of fanservice, but it only gets potentially-offensively high in the third game (though my standards for this may be different from yours.) 1 is pretty good, 2 is the best, 3 is the worst but if you liked 1 and 2 you may as well give 3 a shot.
