Resto Druid Feedback

Blizzard recently sought out class feedback on the forums and I finally got around to writing out my thoughts.

In general I am a happy camper about the state of resto druids, so the feedback is a little brief. However, I am NOT a happy camper about the fact that the feedback thread is post-capped. Grr… Hopefully they start another thread for those who didn’t get a chance to post.

What type of content do you focus on? [PvE/PvP/Both]

PVE – I am a restoration druid.

If PvE, what type of PvE? [Heroics/Raids/Other]

25-man raids

What are your biggest quality-of-life issues?

Lifebloom use is a little restrictive, especially on 2-tank fights. If there were a way to be able to have LB on two targets at once or a quick way to swap a 3-stack from one target to another if would make a big difference. If LB lasted an extra second that would also be awesome.

What makes playing your class more fun?

So many things make druids fun.

I like our versatility and shapeshifting ability. It’s great to shift into cat form and give your group a speed boost with Stampeding Roar or stealth past a trash pack. It’s great to shift into bear form for a stun or an interrupt. It’s great to turn into a tree when we need to put out extra healing.

I love that we are no longer stuck in tree form all the time. Two thumbs up for tree form as a cooldown.

I also really love the play style of resto druids. It’s fun to be able to heal so many people at once while tracking HoTs, managing Lifebloom stacks, keeping Harmony active and watching our mana. Druid healing feels very elegant when you get into a good rhythm.

What makes playing your class less fun?

With lots of healing comes lots of aggro. On fights with adds I usually attract every stray mob in the area. I don’t think aggro is a problem healers should have to worry about and it’s not fun to have to throttle my healing in order to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

How do you feel about your “rotation”? (Rotation is the accepted order in which abilities are used to maximum efficiency.)

I enjoy the druid rotation. There’s some structure to it (keep lifebloom up, cast at least 1 direct heal every 10 seconds), but there’s also a lot of room for personal preference in spell selection. There are a lot of little things that separate a great druid from one who’s just okay, and I like that.

What’s on your wish list for your class?

  • A faster way to build Lifebloom stacks on tank switches.
  • I’d like an extra spell or two.  Our current set of healing spells is good, but it is somewhat limited compared to the other healing classes. Another group healing spell would be great, to remove some of the focus from Wild Growth (they could even share a cooldown). Options are always good.
  • A damage mitigation spell.
  • Less bloat in our talent tree and improvement of some of the lower tier talents. Blessing of the Grove is just terrible. Living Seed is a nice idea but could use some improvements to make it more viable. Nature’s Cure should be part of the resto specialization so we don’t have to spend a point on it.
  • A Fade-like ability.

What spells do you use the least?

Healing Touch. I do use it in raids but generally I only cast it a few times per fight.

  1. A bit off topic, but I’m a bit disappointed in the T13 4p bonus.

At best (i.e. no overhealing), Timeslip will double the HOT output of Rejuvenation and Regrowth. So for a single proc:

Rejuvenation: Assume that the HOT will heal for 100 over its duration. Gift of the Earthmother will increase this to 115 before the T13 set bonus.
With the 4p set bonus, the HOT is doubled but (based upon the wording of the blue post) the GotE portion is unaffected. Therefore the total is increased to 215. This amounts to an 87% increase in Rejuvenation’s total heal.

Regrowth is a little more difficult since the direct portion can crit, but in a recent WoL parse I have about 9.5% of my Regrowth heals coming from ticks (ignoring that most of it ended up as overheal). (World of Logs – Real Time Raid Analysis). At best, Regrowth is buffed by 8.7%.

This means that overall Rejuv will be buffed by 0.1*87 = 8.7% and Regrowth by 0.87%. However, I’m very skeptical of seeing even this much increase in output since it’s likely to all be overhealing. A double duration Rejuv will take 24s to expire, and if overhealing is removed from my Regrowths, the HOT accounts for a paltry 1.5% of its total healing. As a 10m raider (about halfway through HMs) I can think of very few times that non-tanks remain damaged for 24 seconds outside of fights that have a constant damage aura.

    • I don’t think it’s a particularly great bonus either. There are some times the extra HoT time could be useful. Thinking of the T12 fights: phase 2 of Beth’tilac, Majordomo in scorpion form, phase 2 of Rhyolith. But if raid damage isn’t constant, I agree that the bonues will mostly end up being overhealing.
